What is Gypsy Clothing?

Gypsy or bohemian clothing is a nomadic style of dressing that originated in the 1700s after the french revolution ended. This political upheaval led many people into poverty, which made them opt for a simple lifestyle with what was considered unfashionable at the time – loosely fitted clothes and messy hair. If only they knew that many years later it’d grow into one of the biggest subcultures and be everyone’s source of inspiration at Coachella and other music festivals! But by the 1800s, this boho way of dressing was already starting to be seen as creative expression and individuality.

  • Popular gypsy clothing fabrics include cotton, linen, crochet, chiffon, suede and velvet. Any of these fabrics with embroidery, beads or fringes are perfect for boho girl clothing.
  • Choose earthy and dull colors like shades of brown, orange, beige and cream. You can also try some floral and paisley prints.
  • To accessorize, opt for light scarves with tassels or fringes, dangly earrings, metal armbands, multiple rings, headscarves, fringed bags and cowboy boots.
  • As for hair and makeup, try a loose braid or some messy waves and bare minimum makeup.
  • And last but not the least, have a free-spirited mind and attitude and you’ll look and feel as boho as ever!

Anyone with any body type can rock gypsy clothing but if you’re unsure about how to make it work for full-figured types, here are some tips. Choose boho fashion cardigans and kimonos that are long and go way past your hips, which will give a slimming effect. Also try hippie style dresses or maxis that cinch in at the waist. Avoid maxi dresses of you’re on the shorter side and go for dresses that end a lil above the knees. And if you’re wearing bohemian tops, make sure they’re not too loose or flowy. Try ones that show a bit of skin with a cold or off shoulder. And add gypsy accessories to emphasize your assets!

Vintage Gypsy Clothing

boho-chic-vintage-gypsy-clothing-outfit-ideas-hippie-bohemian-outfitVintage boho clothing was not always as extravagant and accessorized as it is nowadays. They kept it quite plain and simple, not because they wanted to but because they were forced to due to their poverty. Atleast in the beginning. It was only later on that gypsy clothing became to be considered creative self-expression. Vintage gypsy fashion also had some fun prints and head accessories. So try some empire waist dresses with bell sleeves and some headscarves and bands to nail that gypsy vintage chic look.
