How to Tackle Curly Hair Problems

How to Get Rid of Hair Tangles?

Tangles – The curly hair struggle we all know and hate! Hair tangles are almost a part of having curly hair. Over time, you barely realize they’re even there! It’s like no matter what you do, your hair gets tangled! Braiding or tying your hair up before you go to bed is a great idea. Otherwise it gets tangled and knotted up so easily that by morning we wake up looking like Bellatrix.

Products like hair detangling sprays and serums come in super handy too. Another good way to keep tangles at bay is to comb it out which leads to our next problem – brushing.

How Can I Brush Curly Hair?

The answer is pretty simple – You just can’t! Oh, the dreaded hair brush! We all know what brushing can do to our precious curls! If you own a hair brush, you need to get rid of it ASAP. One trick that I personally love doing is to comb it lightly before the shower and get rid of 50% of the tangles and the rest that are difficult to get out can be removed with ease in the shower after it’s conditioned. The conditioner helps to soften and remove tangles with ease but keep in mind to be gentle as hair is more prone to breakage when its wet.

How to Tame Frizzy Hair?

Frizz is one of the major curly hair problems but there are ways to deal with them. One way to do it is by using shampoo only on your scalp and not on the actual hair itself. I’ve noticed a huge difference in my hair ever since I started using this curly hair hack. Use cold water in the shower instead of warm or hot. Yes, warm water is soothing and all that but it’s really bad for the hair. Once you actually start doing this, you’ll never want to go back ’cause it helps massively! The cold water basically helps to lock in the moisture, thereby reducing frizz. Another curly hair care tip for frizz is to pat the hair dry gently with a soft cotton t-shirt rather than rubbing it harshly with a towel. After the shower, I recommend a serum or mousse. One that I personally love is the Bed Head Foxy Curls Contour Cream by TIGI.

How to Deal With Dry Curly Hair?

One way to tackle this problem is by staying away from all forms of heat whether it’s the sun or the hair dryer. I know curly hair takes ages to dry and a dryer is the best option in the mornings when you’re running late, but trust me, it’s not worth damaging your hair! Steer clear of using excessive hair products as well. Try to keep your curly hair care regimen as chemical-free as possible. You can also opt for cleansers rather than a shampoo as it is more gentle on the scalp. The rainforest shine shampoo from the Body Shop is a good one. See to it that you get your hair trimmed once every three months. Keeping your body hydrated by drinking lots of water also helps deal with this curly hair issue.

How to Keep Curly Hair Nourished?

Curly hair is naturally dry which is why deep conditioning masks and treatments are ideal. There’s tons of DIY masks out there but one that I personally love is to apply a mixture of coconut oil and honey on to the hair from scalp to roots for a couple of hours before I shower. The longer you leave it for, the better. Olive oil works as an amazing alternative as well. The oils and honey might take a little effort to wash off but it’s totally worth it! The oil nourishes and moisturizes the hair while the honey gives it shine, making this the perfect curly hair care home remedy. Make this a part of your curly hair care regimen and you’ll surely notice the difference! Another curly hair hack you can give a try is to wrap a wet towel around your hair while you leave the conditioner in for around twenty minutes.

How to Protect Hair From Humidity?

Humidity, aka every curly haired girl’s nightmare is another one of the major curly hair problems. We’re all only human and cannot control the weather but what we can do is take some steps to prevent looking like Monica from Friends! Don’t wash your hair on a humid day. Even if you have, try not to leave your hair down. Either tie it into a ponytail or go for some pretty braids. However, if you really want to let your hair down, use some leave-in conditioner before hand. You can also accessorize with a cute beanie, snap back or a head band to keep it all out of your face. Also, try head scarves and bandannas to curb flyaways. And when all else fails, every curly haired girl knows the one thing you can fall back on is the trusted bun!

How Often Do I Wash My Hair?

It all depends on what type of curly hair you have. If your hair is extremely dry, do it once or twice a week but if it’s pretty oily, you need to do it more often. However, too much shampooing can lead to hair fall. There aren’t too many products targeted towards curly hair, especially in India which is another one of the many curly hair problems but one that I’ve used religiously for a very long time is the Totally Twisted shampoo by Herbal Essences. The conditioner from the same range is just as great. If your hair is also colored, find the perf shampoo here: Best Shampoo for Color Treated Hair: Make Those Highlights Last

What is the Ideal Curly Hair Length?

Short hairstyles like the bob make curly hair stick out on the sides, so the ideal length would be shoulder level and below because the longer the hair, the more it weighs down. But then the volume on your scalp decreases, making it look flat. Gosh, it’s just an endless circle of struggles! But, there are ways to deal with this issue. Try back combing (gently) or make a poof with the help of some bobby pins or go for a loose messy bun, taking out some face framing curls. For a bob or shorter hair, you can keep your curls in place with the help of a serum or mousse.

What Curly Hairstyles Can I Opt for?

It’s quite hard to get curly hairstyles right but there are a few foolproof ones that you can achieve in just a matter of minutes!

1. The double ponytail – You never have to experience the classic case of a broken hair tie ever again with this hairdo. This hairstyle works great ’cause you divide the hair into two sections and make two different ponies which reduces the volume and the weight of the hair at the crown. Plus you get longer-looking hair!

2. The messy bun – There are many girls that try so hard to achieve the perfect messy bun but to curly haired girls it comes naturally! It barely takes any effort and time but looks gorgeous.

3. The half bun – If you want something that’s not as basic as a bun, try the half bun updo. It not only looks beautiful, but it’s also super easy to do! I personally love this hair do and it’s one of my go-to hairstyles for everyday.
