What to Wear to an Indian Engagement Ceremony?

If you’re getting engaged, wearing something that makes a statement and shows off your personality is the way to go. Because on your wedding day, you have to wear the traditional attire and there’s not so much room for creativity! So if you’re wearing a saree on your wedding day, try a lehenga or gown on your engagement ceremony. If you’re wearing a lehenga on your wedding day, wear gown saree, cocktail dress or a gown for your engagement.

So, I’ve chosen more than 50 engagement party dresses – all from the latest Lakme Fashion Week 2016 or the latest designer collections. Having a non-conventional party? No worries, I’ve got you covered for EVERY type of Indian engagement party dresses for ALL types of ceremony parties. Let’s check them out!

Engagement Party Dresses for ALL Types of Parties

Sunset Engagement Party at a Beach

I love sunset beach parties – what’s better than exchanging rings while hearing the waves and watching the sun go down, making the sky orange and red. So, try sunset colors like deep yellow, bronze, peaches and violet-oranges. Maxi dresses work great for casual beach parties. If it’s a more traditional affair, wear a crop-top lehenga or a  jacket lehenga.

Black-Tie Engagement Party

If it’s a formal night with a black-tie dress code, gowns and cocktail dresses are the best bet. Wear something that either matches or totally contrasts your fiancée’s tux. So black, or precious stone colors work great – like ruby red, emerald green or sapphire blue. Strapless gowns, asymmetric dresses or poofy gowns, all are great ideas.

Garden Party at Sunset

Garden Parties are my favorites after beach parties. In fact, they can be even better for weddings and engagements because beach can always make your shoes sandy and you can’t wear heels there! Anyways, if you’re lucky enough to have a sundowner garden engagement party, wear something feminine in a soft color palette. Crop-top lehengas are the best ideas, and gowns work well too. Choose floral embroidery to match the garden theme, in fact, you can even match the color of the flower motifs to those the garden has, and then match it to the decor. Floaty and sheer fabrics work great, like chiffon silk, tulle or organza.

Casual Lunch Party

If it’s just a small casual gathering of friends and family, try lighter colors that work well in the daytime, like sky-blue, pale green or peach. Crop-top lehengas or minimalistic gowns are great ideas.

Casual Candlelight Dinner

If it’s a casual thing, but in the evening, then you can take it up a notch. Both deep colors like burgundy or light colors like peach or blush work well. Good options to wear are floor-length dresses, elegant gowns or concept lehengas.

Sundowner Cocktail Party

It’s a sundowner, so wear something shimmery that works well for the after-dark pictures too! Gowns are the best for cocktail parties, so choose something not too heavy, but flattering and glam!

Glam Dance Night

If it’s a glam-fam night at a nightclub, or a rooftop dance night or something, then choose metallic shades like gold, copper or silver that have all eyes on you at the dance floor! You can even go for red. For dance nights, you can also try the fun trends like silk fringes or cut-out dresses or sheer-back gowns.

Indian Extravaganza

If it’s an extravagant party in the big fat Indian wedding style, designer lehengas or gowns are the best bet.

Destination Wedding Engagement

Destination weddings can be dressed for in so many ways, depending on what the destination is. If it’s a royal fort in Jaipur, heavy Indian embroidered gowns are perfect because they give that Indian princess-y feel. If it’s an outdoor party with dance, try glam lehenga skirts with crop tops or fringe blouses this year. Lehenga-sarees or saree-gowns are also great if you want something non-poofy.

Traditional Engagement Party

For traditional parties, lehengas, lehenga-jacket sets and anarkali gowns are the best bets. If it’s a large, extravagant party, wear soemthing heavy like a poofy embroidered lehenga. If it’s a smaller traditional party, try floor-touching anarkalis or elegant lehengas in a nice color that suits you. This summer, pastels like powder blue, blush, pale yellow and pale olive greens are very trendy.
