Models like Bella Hadid, Taylor Hill and Gigi Hadid walked the runway.

Playing with fabrics typically found in sportswear, like mesh, bonded waterproofs, jersey and ultra-lightweight nylon, the collection aimed to combine acive-wear with luxury. The looks also brought together sportswear design elements like drawstrings, ruching, lettering and organic color-blocking shapes.

“Sportswear is the future of fashion; to make it unique and luxurious is the challenge I took this season. This is a collection that is all about a woman’s freedom: freedom of movement, freedom of activity, freedom to fight for their ideas, freedom to be whomever you want to be,” said Donatella Versace in the fashion show description. This collection certainly progresses from Versace FW16 couture collection, and is visibly a toned-down, everyday wearable version of it. Although, the fabrics don’t take into account the hot summer months the collection is mostly designed for. Replacing some of the leather and nylon with cotton would be great for those hot weeks of June and wearers with sensitive skin.

The collection showed two major outfit combinations. Firstly, contrasting bags in bright colors paired with black dresses. And secondly, tight leggings with matching tops worn with long flowy jackets. The other pieces included mini-dresses, streamlined calf-length slit midis and coats, mini-skirts worn with crop-tops or co-ord jackets. The color palette mixed black with brights – like forest green, yellow, red and purple.

Print was used nearly as much as multi-color-blocking. Checkered prints and organic graphics mixed with what the brand calls “fresh Versace lettering”. The accessories included cross-body structured bags, bold belts, skinny steel chokers, large single earrings. The models wore straight center-parted hair and strappy platform heels or booties.

Two of my favorite looks from Versace Spring Summer 2017 collection were a slit mini-skirt paired with striped leather jacket and lace-up boots, and a slit-dress that mixed mesh and nylon with slashed panels. Both looks combine style with comfort that has become a signature of Versace in the recent collections.
