Valentino-fall-winter-2017-haute-couture-collection-dress-1-bottle-green-gownValentino Couture Fall 2017 collection came as one of the most awaited parts of Paris Fashion Week. It was inspired by 17th-century religious portraits as stated on the Instagram page of Valentino.

Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli used various silhouettes like flared trousers, cape dresses and priest gowns but unfortunately, we were unimpressed because the waistless gowns lacked structure and glam. The outfits were all straight and failed to flatter the frames of the models.

The color palette was vast with hues of green, yellow, brown, pink and pastels like peach, olive green and twilight blue. The fabric range was as broad as the palette – from brocade to chiffon, lace to velvet to organza, we saw a variety.

The show started with orange crêpe trousers paired with a pink velvet cape tunic. In the next look the trousers were paired with a thigh-length top with extra long sleeves, which had two jackets a crop jacket and a knee length burgundy jacket.

Capes were seen in the collection paired with trousers and gowns. We saw extra printed and plain capes, too.

Gowns included tulle and priest robes. Sheer, embroidered, ruffled, strapless and plunging v-neckline gowns were distinguished. I liked the silver fringed embroidered gown and twilight blue colored sheer outfit with extra long sleeves.

Tiny details like honey comb embroidery, lace finishings, applique and sequin work were common in the gowns.

The designer followed art theme in gowns. Some of the gowns had large acanthus leaf and floral motifs, making art the most important trend in eveningwear.

All the dresses had one accessory in common – cherry red colored drop earrings. In a few looks we also saw matching pendant sets. Models carried novelty shaped copper sling bags. Shoes included white ankle length booties.

Overall, the house’s Fall 2017 Couture collection disappointed me especially when compared to the Valentino’s Fall 2016 Couture collection, which had interesting elements like bubble skirts, embellished accents, statement jewelry, etc. Piccioli’s religious portrait inspiration paved way to boxy outfits. Try to create something more flattering piccolio!
