Lehenga Designs: Top 11 Trends in Bridal Lehengas for 2016

1. Lehenga with Trail

Certainly the #1 trend in Indian bridal lehenga designs is the trail! Bringing home the royal tradition of the West, a trail adds glamour and richness to any designer lehenga, and makes it look really like a couture lehenga. So try a long, long trail this season! (Psst. I also saw a long trail bridal lehenga in the movie Shandaar).

2. Ombre Lehenga

One of my favorite trends this season is ombre. Ombre has taken over the latest hair color trends, nail polish trends, and even lipsticks. Now sure enough, ombre lehengas are the next step!

3. Anarkali Lehenga

Anarkali lehenga is one in which the choli is sewn with long anarkalis that go down to the length of the lehenga. It may also have a sheer anarkali “top” over the choli that ends a couple of inches above the floor. Latest bridal lehenga designs also have anarkali styles – both in the lehenga and in jackets worn over it.

4. Jacket Lehenga

Designers like Satya Paul and Manish Malhotra had long, ankle-length jackets over the lehengas in their collections. The jacket may be opaque, in silk or crepe, and may take place of the choli, or it may be sheer to be worn over a cropped choli.

5. Lehengas Embellished with Mirror and Crystal

If embroidery in zari or dori is too much for you, try embellished lehenga designs that have crystals or mirror work.

6. Gota Patti Border

Gota border has been in trend amongst lehenga designs since 2014, and this year, designers like Reynu Taandon and Ritu Kumar have embroidered gold borders. Both wide and narrow borders are trendy. Also try heavy tassles at the corners of dupatta. We’re seeing so many latest bridal lehenga designs with gota patti, so this one’s a must-try for your trousseau!

7. Long Sleeves

Long sleeves is another trend that may be helpful for destination weddings or Winter brides! Try full or long sleeves with gowns or long cholis.

8. Bundhgala Choli and Kurta Lehenga Designs

Here’s yet another trend for the winter brides. You can try cropped bundhbala cholis, or long, kurta-style tops.

9. Velvet

Velvet is still going strong in wedding lehenga designs. Velvet lehengas seem too heavy? Try velvet cholis with silk lehengas or velvet patch-work.

10. Contrast Border

Double color lehengas are nothing new. And for 2015-2016, try just the border in a contrasting, unconventional color like yellow, olive green or mint green.

11. Unconventionally Red

For the unorthodox brides, lots of different styles in wedding dresses are in vogue. Try Indo-Western gowns or sari-lehengas. Print patch-work or layered gowns are also trendy.
