Like a daydream, Schiaparelli Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2016-17 fashion show was rooted in fantasy. The collection draws its inspiration from Elsa Schiaparelli’s famous 1938 Circus collection. It also attempts to bring out the three qualities – “poise, precision and sparkle”, that are common between haute couture and circus.

The collection combines modern silhouettes with whimsical elements. These outfits are like branches and leaves of a tree that grew where the seed of fantasy was sown.

Some dresses had circus motifs of harlequin and trapeze (shown in bar jacket above). Some had animal patterns including butterflies, ducks and peacocks. A gown in midnight-blue was strewn with painted stars forming constellations amidst angels in the sky.

Some others were very statement – my favorite being this romper with a psychedelic pattern, the motif of a face and the three-dimensional sun of place Vendôme:

Black made up much of the color palette, but there were also some multi-colored patterns and some shocking pink.

The shoulder was given really interesting and striking designs. Embellishments, shoulder-pads and exaggerated shoulder-lines were described as “Constructivist aesthetic”.

Towards the end of the fashion show, the collection had some satin and metallic gowns, one-shoulder, asymmetric or plunging-V-necked, some of whom were reminiscent of liquid metal. My favorite ones were this gold gown and this strapless gold and black dress – both inspired, classic and red carpet worthy, just like the rest of the collection.
