Ralph & Russo Spring Summer 2020 collection

Ralph & Russo Spring 2020 SS20 RTW dresses (5)Pretty or disappointing? Or both? When you’re a design house as beloved as Ralph & Russo, everyone waits for your new fashion show.

Creating a mark on the world of fashion, the designer duo have become the epitome of luxurious fashion classics and elegant silhouettes. And yet, this season, I constantly had to keep reminding myself that this was indeed a Ralph & Russo collection (cough, not Elie Saab, cough!).

But then, I also have to keep telling myself this – evolving and changing direction is not a bad thing at all, especially in any creative field. So for Spring 2020, instead of those usual fitted midi-dresses and gorgeously poufy gowns that take ready-to-wear in the realm of couture, it’s time for boho maxis, jumpsuits and bathrobe-style coats.

Other than the collection’s Ralph & Russo-ishness (or lack thereof), the collection was all about comfort and style. It was boho-chic done in a luxurious way, if that’s even possible. Silhouettes also included mini-skirt suits, gowns, mini-dresses, long sheer dresses and matching sets.

There were loads of millennial-style outfits, with a very college-to-office, day-to-night vibe. One of the looks was a sweatshirt-dress worn under a lapel jacket. Another was a pair of track-pants worn over sneakers, but paired with a silk scarf and shoulder-padded jacket.

The models looked like students themselves – with messy, uncombed hair and sleep-deprivation-highlighting-eyeliner that reminded me of my grad school days.

Some pieces were oriental/Komono-inspired, and others had luxurious fur-trimmings on the decolletage or sleeves. The color palette was just as varied as the collection itself. A melange of pastels included peachy-nudes, dove, cloudy white, powder blue and baby pink. Whereas there were also brights – like mustard and raspberry red.

Overall, it’s clear that the collection focuses more on practicality and efficiency rather than on ladylike “elegance,” whatever that means. And considering we at ShilpaAhuja.com always value wearability (as long as it’s chic), we have no reason to complain. Or do we?
