As if unfolding a story, Rahul Mishra takes his signature style further this time by using three-dimensional layers and floral motifs. Using bolder elements and patterns is perhaps Rahul Mishra’s way of saying that he isn’t out of stories yet. There are many more waiting to be told.
When I was in architecture school, in our first class of the core course Architectural Design, we were taught about the five basic principles of design – symmetry, composition, balance, dynamism and rhythm. It seems Mishra has kept in mind all of these elements to create his collection. After stripping away the fluff of the Renaissance architecture that had European influence, both modern architecture and fashion became just about functionality – baring its structural elements. The post-modern architecture is, however, about creating sculptural elements all over again. Mishra’s pieces in some way, can also be classified as sculptural.
The fashion show started with pieces in pale yellow and white, and graduated to navy and blues, and finally ended with the darker grey with black. The silhouettes included pleated skirts, mini-dresses, blouses, flared pants, crop-tops and slashed skirts (the likes of which we saw in Dior RTW Fall 2015 earlier this year, and has been seen in the collections of Jonathan Saunders among others. The collection shows a play of collars and jackets with three-dimensional floral and geometric motifs as shoulder embellishments. These remind one of parametric design, which is a method of intelligently designing architectural elements. With these futuristic ideas, Rahul Mishra aims to dress the modern woman in silhouettes that stand out of the crowd by making a statement and a lasting impression. And who doesn’t want that?
