It’s a great idea that your son is going, and it’ll certainly be very special for him because it’s going to be his first time in India. Since it’s his cousin’s wedding, it’ll be a good idea for him to wear something heavy that marks him as a close family member and as a special guest. So a sherwani or bundhgala is the best option. If he wants to wear something light, go for a kurta with dupatta.
A silk or brocade sherwani with damask pattern is the perfect idea for a lightweight yet rich looking option. For a heavy sherwani, go for embroidered designs. Crimson, gold, blue and cream are all good ideas for colors in sherwanis. Pair it with a churidar pajami or dhoti for an ethnic look. They usually come with dupattas, but if your son thinks it a hassle, he can wear the sherwani as it is.
A plain silk kurta with an embroidered dupatta or an embroidered kurta with a plain dupatta, both are good options. Pastels like pale green, sky blue and lilac are good for spring summer. For winters, gold and royal colors like blue and ruby are great. Pair it with chooridar pants or pajama, and add some cool jootis.

You can also accessorize the kurta with a Nehru or bundhgala jacket.
