Review | Collection
Lady-like dressing has traditionally been associated with collars or high-necklines, structured clothing and belts, knee-length or lower hemlines and of course, sleeves. However, one factor other than the dressing detail traditionally made the overall “look” lady-like, and that was poise.
The Dictionary definition for poise reads “a dignified, self-confident manner or bearing; composure; self-possession”. Oscar de la Renta’s latest Resort 2017 collection is blurring the lines between casual and formal. Perhaps the term I’ll give to this newfound trait is casual elegance.
The collection mixes casual and formal with tiny details – sheer lace and crochet panels in midi-skirts and dresses, fringe trimmings, wedge sandals paired with formal dresses, sheer maxi dresses and asymmetric slits. The collection makes a perfect case for this “casual elegance” with the model’s casual stances even as they pose in the formal gowns and skirt-suits.
Perhaps the purpose is to appeal to younger generations, and to mix formal and casual in the same collection just so the formal looks have a more “Resort” or vacation-like feel. Either ways, the details don’t take away the beauty or the wearability of the outfits. Here are my favorite looks:
Two of the gowns I really loved are both sheath gowns – a pink floral textured one with a yellow waistband that extends to the floor, and a black strapless elegant timeless classic number.
Amongst the dresses and outfits, I liked a white full-sleeved dress with a floral design, a blue skirt-suit with exaggerated peplum and belt, and a dotted white maxi skirt with an asymmetric hemline and a purple belt.
