Manish Malhotra Couture 2017 Collection is Inspired by Paris Couture Week

With western trends, Manish Malhotra Couture 2017 collection reminded me of Paris Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2017. Here are all 8 of them!

Being the influential designer that he is, this collection also sets the tone for 2018’s wedding fashion in India. Manish Malhotra’s work has always taken Indian fashion forward, especially by taking inspirations both from traditional Indian fashion and western styles. From 1990s designs that brought strapless saree blouses and flared pants with slits and crop-tops to last season’s off-the-shoulder cholis, floor-touching ponchos and lehengas with long trains, one can always find western inspirations elegantly merged with Indian clothing.

Manish Malhotra Couture 2017 collection goes a step further. Here, Malhotra borrowed lots of popular couture gown and cocktail dresses trends from Paris Haute Couture Week in this true east meets west collection. The choli became at times a bold corset or bustier and at times a heavily bejeweled peplum top. And the lehenga became an A-line skirt that lacks the stereotypical polki or zardozi but doesn’t lack luster – it’s still very Indian, still very Manish Malhotra. And yet, we are left wondering whether we like all the trends from Paris Couture Week, not just of this year but also last year’s, which we saw Manish Malhotra incorporate in his latest collection. Is it a good thing? You decide!

So let’s take a look at the 9 western fashion trends we spotted just last month in Paris Haute Couture that found their way into gorgeous Manish Malhotra gowns:

Manish Malhotra Couture 2017 Collection: East Meets West

1. Floor-Touching Sleeves

Paired with a pearl and glass-bead encrusted lehenga was a choli with embellished sheer sleeves, falling from the elbow down to the floor in a fairy-tale way. Reminded me of Ralph & Russo’s cape-sleeved gown. We also saw this trend in Tarun Tahiliani Couture 2017 collection.

Cholis took the avatar of off-the-shoulder, corsets, bustiers, peplums and plunging V-necks. Bustiers were common in this collection, replete with embellishments and embroidery. We’ve seen them prominently last season in Dior Spring Summer 2017 collection and in some of this year’s western bridal couture collections.

Again, another trend we’ve seen in Paris Fashion Week FW17 is sheer gowns and sheer top panels, which I loved being translated into saree and lehenga cholis both last season and again, this season with this jewel-embellished crop top. Very Bollywood!

Feathers are one of the hottest couture trends for Fall/ Winter 2017, spotted in the collections of Chanel, Ralph & Russo, Zuhair Murad and Jean Paul Gaultier, especially on shoulders and along the neckline. Manish Malhotra’s lehenga choli had gorge feathers along the neckline, too.

This crimson lehenga was paired with a crop top and silk and feathery poncho, which The Guy says reminds him of Game of Thrones and what he calls “barbaric fashion”. Guy, do you know anything about fashion? Fur and feathers are not the same thing, jeez! But if he were right, fur ponchos – three of them – were seen in Elie Saab FW17 couture collection.

This totally fringed silver lehenga and choli was paired with a burgundy floor-length jacket – buttonless and front open. This is, of course, a good way to create a pairing for winter weddings. Also loving the shoulder cut-outs.

The dupatta doesn’t have to be a dupatta anymore, says Manish Malhotra, in 2018. It needs to grow up. Er… or down – to become a cape – attached to the sleeves no less. We spotted the off-the-shoulder sleeve-cape in Ralph & Russo FW17 couture collection.

And of course, let’s not forget the lehenga that wouldn’t be recognizable as a lehenga if you only saw it without the choli or dupatta. The large rose applique is simple yet catchy.

Here’s one more on Alia Bhatt as the showstopper for Manish Malhotra Couture 2017 collection:
