Lakme Fashion Week Winter Festive 2016 came to an end with Sabyasachi Mukherjee‘s latest fashion show. The collection was presented with Kareena Kapoor Khan as showstopper.

With a design sense that’s deep rooted in the rich Indian culture and craftsmanship, Sabyasachi belongs to the league of Indian fashion designers whose every collection comes under the weight of a lot of expectation.

This was not a disappointing one, though. The fashion show played with mixing inspirations and savior faire. From 1920s Paris Salon to 1970s, the inspiration came from many decades. A muted color palette of greys, pastel browns and burgundy and pale gold with some black brought classiness to the wedding collection.

Silhouettes encompassed velvet sarees, silk sherwanis, embroidered long kurtas and even micro-mini dresses paired with fur vests. Nearly every inch of every silhouette was covered in embroidery, some large and some intricate motifs – including Kashmiri tilla embroidery and sequins. Tulle, khadi and revival Benarasi fabrics were also used.

Such a concoction of extremes in everything ranging from silhouettes to colors to embroideries is tricky. However, Sabyasachi makes it look effortless in his collection.

Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan was the showstopper and walked the ramp with her baby bump. She wore a greyish-moss green lehenga that embraced the idea that even maternity wear can be statement for the wedding season! Her makeup played up the happy maternity theme that I quite loved.

Jewelry was worth a mention, too – ranging from choker necklaces to large earrings and headpieces. Another thing I really support about this collection is the use of fake fur for accents and statement vests, capes and even a large clutch. Wish more designers embrace fake leather and fur, because I am against animal cruelty.

My favorite looks from the collection were a royal blue mini-dress with Taj Mahal motif, a mocha-pink mini-dress paired with fur shoes and stole and a black embroidered bridal lehenga with Kashmiri embroidery.
