From Manish Malhotra to Ritu Kumar, from long train to pre-draped, silk to georgette, here are the top & latest designer sarees and 11 saree trends for 2016.
Sarees are one of the oldest Indian outfits and yet they never cease to innovate more and more. This versatile nine yard fabric can be suited to any occasion – weddings, formal office parties, college farewells or even the important day in your life. So we’ve made a list of the hottest and latest saree trends for 2016 – for every occasion and for every type of woman!
Latest Saree Trend #1: Cape Sarees
Capes are the hottest thingg on the saree market! From cape jackets, they made their way to cape gowns and now to sarees. Capes can be sheer or opaque, can be like a cover-up for the winter, or look like a part of the outfit – try all cape styles this season-cropped cape, jacket cape and floor touching cape.
Latest Saree Trend #2: Color Pleated Sarees
Color pleats!! After last year’s trend of a pallu in different color, now the differently colored pleats are in! Typically, the pleats are in a different and contrasting color to the rest of the saree, and the pallu may or may not be in another third color. You can pick an embellished one for weddings or parties, and for day events (or your average day date and dance sequence in a Bollywood movie) there’s always the designer chiffon!
Latest Saree Trend #3: Lehenga Saree or Saree Gown
Lehenga sarees are already popular choice among brides for engagements or off-beat weddings. But in 2016, saree gowns are becoming a huge hit! This sequin gold mermaid lehenga saree by Gaurav Gupta is just lovely. If you wanna make more of a statement, try layered styles or those with slits.
Latest Saree Trend #4: Pre-Draped and Concept Sarees
Other than gown and capes, concept sarees are the hottest It-trend right now! They come pre-draped or are worn in a different unique way. The most common ones we saw on the runways was dhoti saree, in many collections of designers like Ritu Kumar and Nikhil Thampi. Some designs like this one from Gaurav Gupta interpret saree like a dress, sometimes with a sheer fabric around the waist and sometimes with a slit. But what we’re loving even more right now is how the designers are playing with different combination of garments here, pairing saree with leggings, scarves and trousers and also contrasting colors and a mix of fabrics.
Latest Saree Trend #5: Sarees with Long Trains
Trails are our #1 trend in the Top Wedding Lehenga Designs for 2016 and of course we’re loving this trend in sarees too. Long train sarees don’t mean just having a long enough pallu that touches the floor. This trend has brought in sarees that are designed with long trains that sweep the floor behind you, like a narrow extension of the pallu, or a separate butt-cape. The burgundy one by Gaurav Gupta with a sheer waist panel is my favorite!
Latest Saree Trend #6: Sheer and Opaque Combination Sarees
Sarees have gone from being translucent to totally sheer to a combination of both! So the pallu can be opaque and saree can be sheer or the other way round, either ways it has an artistic touch to it.
Latest Saree Trend #7: Shoulder Embellishment Sarees
Shoulder embellishment sarees are really in trend, with tassles, rhinestones or embroidery at the shoulder. Try the ones single-tone or two-tone sarees.
Latest Saree Trend #8: Ombre Sarees
After ombre duppattas, and ombre lehengas, the ombre trend has taken over sarees too! The choice of color shades for ombre can be very tricky, but to have the different shades of the same color family is always very appealing.
Latest Saree Trend #9: Pop Print Sarees
Having a bad day? Well what can make you feel better than being engulfed with so many colors?! Try brush strokes, or bold fun pop art! These may not be wedding material but I would definitely want to glimmer in one of these for a fun college special!
Latest Saree Trend #10: Jacket and Long Sleeve Blouse
This season, we’ve been seeing designers experiment with different blouse designs in Lakme Fashion Week – the long sleeve blouse, the kurta blouse, the long kurta jacket and the nehru jacket.
Latest Saree Trend #11: Border Sarees
The border sarees are not really new in the market, but broad borders are very trendy nonetheless! Be it the demure kanjivaram silk saree or a brazen single-tone net saree, borders can make them all b more glam. Try sequin, metallic, gota patti and silk applique borders.
