From last season’s multicolored draping experiment, this year Krishna Mehta came up with much more practical silhouettes, keeping Indo-western theme at the heart of the collection. The silhouettes, although mostly layered, get much simpler and with cleaner lines.

Krishna Mehta collection at AIFW Autumn Winter 2017 was titled ‘Parted Lips’, aimed at the young modern woman. And designing fresh, unique silhouettes gives it a playful and inspiring. The looks included dhoti pants paired with a peplum top, high-waist lehengas paired with crop tops, bustiers, blouses and sometimes layered with jackets. An asymmetric kurta tunic was paired with pajamas.

Some silhouettes overdid the color and pattern, which were my least favorite in the collection, particularly the checkered blouse paired with a lehenga, and a patterned lehenga paired with a patchworked peplum blouse. Both blouses add heaviness and too-much-ness to the outfits:

The color palette was still colorful – shades of reds, purple, blue, metallics like copper and gold, black and pastels like coral red and mocha were paired with each other in different vibrant looks. The looks were adorned with patchwork, hand embroidery and stencil printing. Accessories included bangles, pendant type necklaces, multi-strand necklaces and an asymmetric one, which I predict can become the next it-thing at weddings.

Like many other designers this year, Krishna Mehta toed the line between lehenga and long skirts. The lehengas seemed light, with narrower kalis and some were multicolored or ombre. Cholis too, got an Indo-western makeover with crop jackets paired over bandeau tops, or cross-over metallic ones. Here are two of my favorites:

My favorite look is peplum top paired with a deep-brick-colored dhoti pants. This wearable yet innovative outfit can catch up as a go-to alternative to short kurtas paired with salwars. Perhaps a more practical version would be the dhoti without extra draping on the sides.
