Heighten your daily glow with this mineral powered healing tool – jade roller. Dating back to the 7th century, it is known to be an ancient luxurious Chinese skin-care method billowing popularity in the beauty community. People across the globe are always on the hunt for the next It-thing in beauty and fashion. But if fashion influencers on Instagram are to be trusted, going back to basics seems to be the answer to youthful and perky skin.
With winters approaching soon, we’re definitely on the lookout for a beauty tool. But are jade rollers a must have to keeping your skin looking top class? Let’s find out!
What is a Jade Roller?
As the name suggests, a jade roller is a tool designed like a paint-roller that has a smooth piece of jade stone at one or both ends. It is used to roll over one’s face as a part of a ‘natural wellness’ facial, believed to relax muscles, reduce puffiness and detox skin. Jade rollers have been used in practice by the ancient Chinese since the the 7th century, and are making a comeback and gaining popularity internationally, thanks to Instagram beauty bloggers, YouTubers and many beauty brands.
In India, you can get a jade roller on Amazon, with a price starting at ₹400, going up to ₹1500. You can also find them at Nykaa, Purplle and many more shops, both online and in the stores. In the US, many popular brands like Revlon, Ulta, Herbivore Botanicals, Shiffa, Mount Lai, etc. are selling them. You can practically find one anywhere from Sephora to Target.
All About Jade Rolling
Jade roller sellers say that these face massage tools support what’s called “lymphatic drainage” that helps reduce the appearance of swelling and wrinkles. They are available in delicate rose quartz, amethyst and of course, jade, depending on what suits you best.
Crystal face rollers made from these stones are said to be beneficial in more ways than one to rejuvenate your face. The jade roller gives a feeling of zen, bringing in a sense of calmness and balance into your skincare ritual. This stone massager is touted as a wonder wand to firm up, tighten and lift the skin.
The rose quartz is just the right pick for all you dainty darlings with sensitive skin. Jade is known to be the “heart stone” and helps with soothing and leaving your skin feeling fresh, soothed and less swollen in the morning. Jade stone is also believed to possess special healing abilities and it’s also believed to bring positive energy.
Benefits of a Jade Massager
There are lots of beauty and wellness practice that involve hot or cold stones or cold metal, rolling motions of the stone, etc. both on face, back and other body parts. The rolling stone motion is practiced in many cultures, and is believed to remove toxins and improve the blood flow and decrease puffiness, resulting in a fresh-looking skin.
Some brands like Bronson Professional Jade Roller Massager also have huge claims that haven’t found scientific evidence. They claim that the regular use of jade rollers can lift, slim and sculpt your face, boost collagen and remove negative energy. Other brands claim that jade rolling can remove wrinkles & pores, and are marketing them as an “anti-aging” skin-care and “crystal healing” product.
Jade Roller Reviews on the Internet
“I have been using both the rose quartz and gua sha for a while now and I definitely like them,” says Instagrammer @ethicalpixie in a review. “I put them in my refrigerator and use them at night when I use my facial oils. It definitely helps with the improving product absorption. I only see one difference between the quartz and jade rollers. The rose quartz roller stays cools while rolling on the skin longer whereas the jade roller tends to warm with skin contact.”
She also added in another post, “I have used this jade roller for a while now and I haven’t seen any visible difference. But just rolling it on your face is so calming and soothing. It feels very therapeutic! I was reading that using this roller right after using a mask gives you the most benefit as it lets the product seep in deeper.”
Many Instagram folks also talked about their own experiences in the comments. “I’m really loving the gua sha, I feel like it really relieves tension in my jaw area,” said one. While the other added, “I’ve used jade, rose quartz and obsidian. They’re all the same to me.” Another commenter added, “I personally prefer the rose since it’s smoother and stays cold longer.”
“Give yourself an at-home facial by using your facial roller over your favorite sheet mask,” mentions beauty brand Skin Gym (@skingymco) in an Instagram post. “Not only does the rolling action de-puff and boost circulation, but it helps to massage the mask ingredients into the skin.”
Plus, we found many YouTube beauty “gurus” reviewing jade roller beauty and showing on their channels how to use jade rollers. We can’t say how long they’ve used them for, but here’s one example:
Anyway, let’s take a look at all the benefits jade rollers are able to give, or are touted to give, in detail:
At-Home Facial Massage
Jade rolling relaxes your facial muscles and de-stresses your tissues. The gentle sweeping motions of jade across your skin relieves the muscle tension and puts it at rest. This is where the benefits start.
In the Morning or Before Going to Bed
One reason to start the day with a soothing massage is to help wake up your skin. After waking up, the facial skin may be puffy and the under-eyes may be swollen. Jade is said to have cooling properties, working like a cool cucumber to de-puff your eyes, making you look instantly awake.
Rolling motions of the gemstone play a big part in banishing those under eye bags and also lightening the dark circles temporarily. Use the smaller jade ball to massage your under eyes and invigorate the blood flow.
Or you can reflect on your day with a pacifying night-time facial massage slowly making way for the stress and headaches of the day to wear off, helping you snooze better.
Glow from Within
The benefits of this luxurious beauty treatment is seen more with its long term usage. The religious massage kicks the blood circulation, thereby intensely revitalizing the natural healing properties. Just a few swipes a day and you’re on your way to a healthy flush.
- Plumps up the skin.
- Increases blood flow on the face, which in the long-term reduces the development of fine-lines.
Jade rolling is said to welcome the chi healing vibrations of the face, increasing the flow of lymphatic fluid. The sellers claim that it can strengthen your immune system and clear out the lymphatic toxins or any fluid retention on the face. They also claim it can help in achieving smoothness and firmness to the skin’s surface and banish out the fine lines and wrinkles. However, its anti-ageing properties aren’t based on any scientific evidence, and we’ll come back to that discussion down below.
Shrinks the Pores
Pores are an important part of the skin but due to improper hygiene, they may enlarge over time. Place your jade roller in the fridge for a cooling effect. Massage the clean, cold jade roller over your face slowly. The cooling of this mineral packed crystal is said to have pore minimizing powers, but again this isn’t something that’s been proven yet.
Sops Up the Serums
Feel like most of your products gets absorbed into your hands before they even reach your face? Worry not, this basic but effective jade rolling technique crosses out this concern as well. The rollers of the gemstone help evenly spread out any cream or serum onto your skin and aid it to penetrate better, achieving an even skin tone.
Can Jade Rollers Live Up to Their Claims?
So overall, here are some of the claims that jade roller brands make that haven’t been proven through any research or scientific studies – stimulating collagen back into the skin, anti-ageing and reducing wrinkles, reduce acne or eczema.
Here’s what they can do though – increasing circulation through facial massage. But dermatologists say that it’s similar to any other facial massage, not because of any special properties of jade per say. Your skin may temporarily look less puffy and more luminous. It may give the appearance of being slightly more contoured as the rolling motion will relax the skin tissue, similar to massaging with just oil or moisturizer. Plus, you’ll feel zen overall.
“Jade rollers will not increase collagen stimulation, reduce wrinkles, enhance or increase the penetration of skincare ingredients, or clear acne outbreaks,” says dermatologist Melissa Kanchanapoomi Levin, M.D., clinical attending at NYU Langone and Mount Sinai Hospital in an interview for Marie Claire. A daily massage will de-stress and relax your muscles, and that indirectly will help reduce acne and stress-linked skin conditions.
Skincare expert and facialists explain the main way facials help with a glowing skin. Our faces and necks contain more than 300 lymph nodes, which filter substances that travel through the lymphatic fluid. These lymph nodes contain lymphocytes or white blood cells, which help your body fight infections.
When lymph fluid stagnates or settles, there is a swelling in the face. This happens in certain areas especially, such as under the eyes, at the chin, etc. Facial massages can help get the lymph moving and drained away, which some people term as ‘detoxification’. In turn, the process can make your skin glowy and your face look slimmer or sculpted.
“Many people also use the jade roller to help work treatment serums and oils deeper into their skin, while others simply like the ritual aspect of using the tool,” said Jennifer Stoeckert, holistic facialist and creator of Minimal Beauty, in an interview to Huffington Post.
How to Use a Jade Roller
Start with a clean face. Begin your massage at the collar bone and into the neck, making an exit for the lymphatic toxins. With just a gentle pressure on the roller, move downwards along the side of the neck and upwards from the center of the neck and into the chin and outwards towards the jawline.
Glide the roller up and away into the contours of your face. Working all the way up and start smoothly pushing in a vertical direction and outwards on the forehead to subside the forehead lines. If you have acne, be careful to massage very gently.
Next, swipe across the length of your brows and take a turn into the brow bone and into the inner corners in a quick rotation with rhythmic strokes. Gradually slip onto either sides of your nose for lymphatic fluid drainage. Take your jade rolling a step further and roll over your lips starting from the center and outwards. This will leave your lips with baby pink tint on your lips.
Points to Remember
- Be sure to use the roller on a clean face. Otherwise, it’ll rub any dust particles or leftover makeup deeper into your pores.
- Hydrate your skin with any serum or moisturizer and prep your face for a good self indulgent session before you start rolling.
- Always remember to repeat and redo the process over thrice or more to combat your stress and pamper yourself.
- Also remember to roll down your neck, too.
- There may be slight redness after using the jade roller tool, depending on how sensitive your skin is. Usually, the redness disappears within seconds. If it doesn’t, discontinue use immediately and consult a dermatologist.
Remember that with all its healing, therapeutic and facial massage properties, a jade roller is not a one-stop solution to all your beauty woes. It’s just like any other facial massage, whether that’s massaging oil into your face or rubbing aloe-vera gel with your fingers.
It can be a good addition to your overall wellness regimen, especially if you’re looking for a ritualistic aspect in your beauty routine. The coolness of jade stone can feel great on the skin, however, jade in itself doesn’t have any proven benefits other than that.
How to Take Care of Your Jade Roller
Let’s be honest, I know we all get a little too relaxed to do anything after a massage and end up skipping on cleaning the jade roller. If you are one from this clan then you’ve picked the right beauty tool.
All it asks for is a gentle rub on the roller with a clean damp cloth and that is literally all it takes to maintain your jade roller. You can also keep the roller clean by washing it with soap and water after use. Dipping it in a bowl of water for a long period of time is something you need to stay away from, if you want your jade roller to last longer.
“If you’re not disinfecting your roller, you may wind up doing more harm than good,” mentioned Susan Bard, a dermatologist with Manhattan Dermatology Specialists, in an interview with Washington Post. She also added that, “If you rub too vigorously, you can actually aggravate acne or create irritation.”
If you have pimples or acne, be sure to massage gently without applying too much pressure, so as to not rupture your pimples. Otherwise, it could lead to increased breakouts due to further inflammation.
