Here’s the biggest Indian bridal fashion battle ever – Deepika Padukone vs. Anushka Sharma vs. the grooms, Ranveer Singh & Virat Kohli! Between mehendi, reception and airport looks, find out who rocked the best wedding outfits! (The winner is not who you think it is!)
So when two of the most highly sought after actresses got married within a span of a year, comparisons in their bridal styles was eminent. Especially since both the couples wore Sabyasachi outfits to their weddings.
To the uninitiated, Anushka Sharma married top cricketer Virat Kohli in December 2017. And Deepika Padukone married her boyfriend and popular Indian actor Ranveer Singh earlier this month.
And since the people of the internet have been comparing each and every look from their weddings, I thought I’d make things official by holding a bridal fashion face-off! So let’s see who rocked the wedding outfits better. And to make things even more competitive, I’m even including the men in the battle of Indian bridal fashion.
Personally, Virat Kohli isn’t as big on fashion as Ranveer. While Deepika frequently plays fashionistas on-screen and also rocks gorge outfits on the red carpets. Anushka’s style on the other hand, looks like she’s trying too hard at times. Plus she honestly looks like she cannot be trusted. And I also hate Ranveer ’cause he looks smug, creepy and too much in-your-face. But anyway, may the most fashionable man (or woman) win!
Indian Bridal Fashion War: Deepika Padukone vs. Anushka Sharma (vs. Ranveer Singh vs. Virat Kohli)
When Wedding Dresses Went to War
Deepika Padukone
For her wedding ceremony, Deepika chose a traditional red bridal saree. The double dupatta look is very trendy. But the rest of the outfit is nothing far from a regular Indian bridal fashion look. Although the saree is too plain, and the dupatta border quite boring, she makes it all look good with the OTT jewelry – large jhumka earrings and a bold choker necklace.
The ghoongat border looks nicer on the side. That said, a fashionista like Deepika could’ve been a little more experimental and statement-making with her look. Yet, she can make anything look good, so brownie point for that!
Score: 4/5
Ranveer Singh
I must say that Ranveer looks way chicer! It’s customary these days to match the groom’s wedding outfit with the bride’s, and Ranveer goes above and beyond the norm to wear red himself. His red sherwani is very groom-like and the OTT jewelry is totally something only he can pull off with that outfit. He also matches his scarf’s border with her dupatta. Super on point!
Score: 5/5
Anushka Sharma
Anushka Sharma wears a petal pink Sabyasachi lehenga to the wedding. With lotus motifs and a net dupatta, the bride looks like a floating flower, just as she had asked the designer to make her look! The outfit is completely on point for a day wedding, and if I could give extra score, look at how fluffy the skirt is!
Score: 5/5
Virat Kohli
Kohli’s look is understated but sophisticated. And Indian bridal fashion is all about making the groom’s attire match yours. The white goes well with the daytime and cloud theme. But he could’ve easily pulled off a bit of bling. It looks more like an engagement outfit. However, I love the leaf motifs and his turban matches the bride’s dress. Aww!
Score: 4/5
Who Won the Wedding Jewelry War?
Deepika Padukone
Deepika’s jewelry for the wedding ceremony, where she’s changed into a silk saree, is just as traditional as her red dress above. A long necklace paired with a choker necklace, and jhumka earrings with matching headpiece.
Score: 4/5
Anushka Sharma
Anushka’s rocking a wedding look with slightly non-traditional twist, just perfectly matching her lehenga. The silver jewelry has pink beads.. She also wears a thin hooped nose ring with a gorgeous polki choker and a large pendant jadau necklace. Rich yet cute.
Score: 5/5
The men aren’t competing in this round since they don’t have any jewelry on. Ah, well…
Wedding Makeup
Deepika Padukone
Deepika’s makeup is big on the eyes – smokey with lots of kohl and paired with a nude lip and small bindi. I don’t care for the nude lip, as it’s too odd for a Hindu bride, but it balances the smokey eye look. Overall, she could’ve pulled off a better look.
Score: 2/5
Ranveer Singh
Well, I can’t judge the men on makeup, so let’s consider their grooming in this round. Ranveer’s face is actually quite well groomed. The beard is somewhere between a stubble and a beard, which I don’t dig, but the ‘stache looks very well planned.
Score: 4/5
Anushka Sharma
Indian bridal fashion is never complete without lots of makeup. But Anushka’s subtle look is perfectly suited to her daytime wedding dress. Very light, and not show-off-y at all! Usually, her extravagant personality is very off-putting for me, so I’m pleasantly surprised at her lack of bling in this makeup. The lips lightly match the lehenga and the eyes are just as lightly done.
Score: 4/5
Virat Kohli
Honestly, Virat’s look is disapointing. He rocks better groomed beard even on the pitch. He could’ve trimmed it better, or even experimented with a slightly new look.
Score: 3/5
Who Wore Mehendi Look Better?
Deepika Padukone
How can the wedding sangeet and mehendi be forgotten when it comes to Indian bridal fashion! Deepika’s mehendi outfit is really gorgeous. Blush pink anarkali dress looks appropriately embellished yet lightweight. Hair looks casual and makeup is not too much, just a fresh look. The excessive jewelry looks very pretty and bridal too.
Score: 5/5
Ranveer Singh
Ranveer is making everything work perfectly. His sherwani has small booti print and I love how he’s again, matching the jacket with the bride’s red dupatta. And he has an A-level sunglasses and hairstyle to match. Very well thought of.
Score: 5/5
Anushka Sharma
Anushka wears a floral crop top with a bright striped skirt in orange and pink. Lots of colors, but it works well as a cute dress for a mehendi function. Although she could’ve rocked something more traditional. But the whole look is well put together with her hair and earrings.
Score: 4/5
Virat Kohli
Virat is casual and cool in a red Nehru jacket with white kurta and jodhpuri pants.Hair looks good. He could’ve gone a bit further to look more like a groom but he had to match Anushka’s casual outfit, so not much choice there.
Score: 3/5
Battle of the Sarees
Deepika Padukone
I’m getting disappointed with Deepika’s reception look. Although it pays homage to Rekha, the saree, although gorgeous, is too plain for a new bride, and the white blouse does nothing to bling her up. The blouse is too matronly, and so is the hair. Plus the smokey brown eye makes her look like she’s been crying. The only saving grace is the jewelry, which at least adds color even if it doesn’t match.
Score: 2/5
Ranveer Singh
Again, the groom’s style is better here. Ranveer’s black sherwani is gorgeous. Although he could’ve chosen a different color, like green to match Deepika’s jewelry, since black isn’t very wedding-like. However, the embroidery is on point and the matching Sabyasachi espadrilles are very cool.
Score: 4/5
Anushka Sharma
Anushka has a mommy look going for her. The sindoor and jewelry look beautiful and the saree is a gorgeous one, too. However, the overall look is less suited for reception party and more for karwachauth.
Score: 3/5
Virat Kohli
Virat’s achkan is quite plain and black, but looks better with the embroidered dupatta, which is very trendy. The shoes work well there, too. He could’ve also accessorized a bit, but that’s probably not his style.
Score: 3/5
Clash of the Reception Lehenga
Deepika Padukone
This look is very magazine editorial-esque. The Sabyasachi lehenga is something we’ve already seen on the designer’s Insta, and I’d not have expected Deepika to rock it at her wedding reception considering how traditional the rest of her looks have been. But unexpected is the latest It-thing in Indian bridal fashion. Hair and jewelry is on fleek, even though we could’ve had shimmery eyeshadow instead of the black smokey.
Score: 5/5
Ranveer Singh
Matching with the bride’s, the groom’s eccentric outfit looks like something from a Sanjay Leela Bhansali set, instead of a wedding reception. However, if he wouldn’t give that creepy expression, I’d appreciate his experimentation. And brownie points for the glow-in-the-dark effect. And the pants!
Score: 4/5
Anushka Sharma
Sharma’s brown lehenga is pretty, although her choice of color is beyond me. The choli is non-traditional, but the Sabyasachi logo belt is quite cool.
Score: 4/5
Virat Kohli
The velvet bundhgala looks quite nice, but doesn’t match the bride’s attire at all, as if they couldn’t agree on one color. Plus his shoes don’t match his jacket either. Try better, dude. At least I prefer midnight blue over Anushka’s brown.
Score: 3/5
Who Rocked the Airport Outfit Better?
Deepika Padukone
Indian bridal fashion is all about the bright colors, especially for brides. And what new bride wears white – it’s not the color of “suhaag”! Plus short anarkalis are out now! But the anarkali suit is very cute, so I’ll give her a couple of points…
Score: 2/5
Ranveer Singh
Ranveer’s kurta and jacket looks very cool and vacation-ey, so that’s great. And he even found matching shoes, even though he could’ve worn ivory to match Deepika’s outfit.
Score: 4/5
Anushka Sharma
Such an ugly outfit. It’s like she doesn’t know how to travel in style. And what is that outfit anyway? An ill-fitted kurta with palazzos is not flattering her shawl and large bag; making the whole silhouette shapeless. Girl, you could’ve at least bothered to brush your hair.
Score: 1/5
Virat Kohli
Kohli’s outfit is a typical celebrity airport look. He doesn’t look like a newly married man, but at least I love the head-to-ankle black with white sneakers look. And the crop skinny pants with tiny socks are very chic!
Score: 4/5
Post Wedding Fashion Battle
Deepika Padukone
Deepika’s look is very androgynous- meets-Indian-woman. The kurta, chooridar and loafers exactly matches Ranveer’s. And her silk dupatta matches his jacket, too, even though it makes her look like a newly married woman. Not glam, but practical and modern.
Score: 4/5
Ranveer Singh
Ranveer’s look is perfect – just like a groom’s next day attire should be. And the elephant motif jacket is very cute!
Score: 5/5
Anushka Sharma
Anushka’s post-wedding Diwali look is traditional, but overly plain. And here we go with the boring odd-colors again! She needs to add a little more bling to the festival of lights.
Score: 3/5
Virat Kohli
No accessories or embellishments, but I love his dhoti. He paired with an asymmetric kurta, with some sort of pants. It’s designer-looking, yet sophisticated and the hairstyle looks very chic, too!
Score: 4/5
And so here’s the total scores, and since the men missed out on one of the rounds, let’s compare them with percentage values! Drum rolls please…
Deepika: 28/40 = 70%
Ranveer: 31/35 = 88.5%
Anushka: 29/40 = 72.5%
Virat: 24/35 = 68.6%
Ranveer is the unexpected winner of the war of the Indian bridal fashion, not closely followed by Anushka! You gotta love his style, even though he gives some creepy expressions! And who knew Virat was nearly just as fashionable as Deepika!! These are game-changers!
BTW, I asked the SlubFamily to vote for their own favorite fashionable person, and an overwhelming majority of you guys chose Deepika Padukone! Well, she does set high expectations, and that’s why she disappointed me! Check out the results of my twitter poll here:

I don’t know but why deepika is heading very slow in terms of career growth. Is it due to JNU incident?
I don’t know why you keep saying “plain” when south indian sarees have pure gold zari. You clearly believe, like most people, brides should be over the top looking like christmas trees
Ranveer’s wedding sherwani is really gorgeous! He brought his A-game!
