Scarves offer endless possibilities and yet we don’t use them so often. Here is how to style a scarf and use them in cute, easy ways!
Hello, ladies! Hope you all had a lovely Christmas! I’m back to work after mine. So, Shilpa asked me if I own scarf in my wardrobe. I was like, of course, I do. I mean most of the girls have at least one scarf in their closet, right? Then she goes on with “How many do you own? How often do you wear scarves? Why I haven’t seen you wearing one to work?” Oops! That’s like one too many questions.
Now that put me into some deep thinking. I have at least fifteen to twenty scarves. Okay! I don’t have a count, actually. So, I have not been using those scarves since I started my work life, like three years ago. Ah! time flies.
I used to layer my clothes (I know, I’m talking about layering in most of my articles!) a lot in college. I wouldn’t limit myself to wearing jackets and scarves only in winter. The sincere fashion enthusiast that I’m, I would try to be unique in what I wear even if it’s a plain tee shirt and jeans. I would drape a scarf in a new way or sometimes use it as a headband to look chic!
But ever since I graduated, I hardly wear them.
“A scarf is a multipurpose accessory and can act as one’s outfit savior.”
Many of us don’t wear scarves or just think it’s going to add too much to your outfit. We hesitate to use them even if we would have bought a designer scarf to try. The point is, we don’t use scarves that regularly or not at all, even though we all have so many in our closet. So, Shilpa wanted to make this point! And that’s why we decided to come up with a guide on how to wear scarves and finally, get them out of the back of our closets. My boss is amazing as always and her words have prompted me to use scarves in most unique ways I could imagine.
A scarf is a multipurpose accessory and can act as one’s outfit savior. You can drape it around your neck to bring instant magic to your outfit, you can accessorize your accessories with a scarf! It’s the perfect option for layering in winter and it can even protect you from sun’s harsh rays during summer. Oh, my! That’s a lot of uses scarves have.
So, let’s check out how to style a scarf in different ways.
1. To Make a Statement
Scarves make a great style statement. Of course, you can wear them to keep warm during winter. But you can sport one any time of the year to look super trendy and stand out. I like the way Miranda Kerr is sporting a bright red scarf here on a denim jacket. It looks alluring with unique fabrics and exotic patterns and enhances the complete look.
You can make a statement by sporting scarves of different materials like fur and leather or try embellished scarves to make you look chic and fashionable.
Blanket scarves have been in vogue for a while now and Burberry turned heads when they came up with blanket scarves with personalized initials on them. Then many celebs were spotted wearing them, too. This style of style of personalized scarves is ultra cool.
2. To Add Color to Monochromatic Outfits
Monochromes look stylish and classy. When you want to add a hint of color to your outfit, you can opt for a scarf. You can pair up a printed statement scarf in your wardrobe with an all black or denim outfit to add an instant charm to your look.
Keep it warm like Blake Lively or tie your scarf into a knot to look simple yet elegant.
3. Use a Scarf as Hair Accessory
Hair accessories are a cool way to accessorize and make your style more versatile. You can tie your hair with a scarf or use it as a head scarf, bandana or turban. Match it with your accessories like bag or belt to add the glamour quotient to your outfit.
4. Accessorize with a Scarf
A unique way to style your scarf is to use it as an accessory. If you’re not really a scarf person and have no clue what to do with the one you own, then use it to accessorize your accessories. Turn your scarf into a bag or just roll it on your handle to add some panache. Or you can just tie it on your handbag for a chic look. You can use your scarf as a belt and create a whole new look. Here are some cool ideas by Hermès on how to style a scarf in different ways.
You can also use your scarf as a necklace, choker or bracelet.
5. Use Your Scarf as a Garment
Scarf as a garment. Yes, you can turn your scarf into a piece of clothing that easily. There are scarf tops available in stores but you can use your over-sized scarf and drape it like a top or skirt. Here are some ways to wear your scarves.
I wore my scarf as a wraparound skirt when I was in Phuket visiting ‘The Big Buddha temple’. Scarves make for great layering pieces while traveling to temples and cathedrals with strict dress codes.

Fringed bags are a passé. Take cues from Olivia Palermo and try fringed scarves. Other new trends are skinny and string scarves.

Stay stylish and fashionable with this edgy look. Couple your print silk scarf with a fur one!

Nice article, but why promote the use of fur? In this day & age, we know that the fur trade is cruel & unethical. Therefor, it is cruel & unethical to encourage it, not to mention, it also looks ridiculous. The one photo of Olivia Polermo wearing multiple dead animal pelts is not fashionable or aesthetically pleasing; it just makes me think of all the animals who spent their lives in cramped cages only to be skinned alive for this rich human’s “fashion”.
Completely agree with fur being unethical, thanks for bringing up this point. We at ShilpaAhuja.com are against animal fur and leather; we’ve talked about it multiple times and only recommend the use of faux fur and leather, which I personally use and can vouch look just as good.

Nice style. One must try them. I guess scarfs will never go out of the fashion.
