3rd Trimester Nausea

Most of us would have heard from our friends or family members who are expecting to have experienced nausea. Nausea is an uneasy sensation wherein you feel an urge to vomit, although it does not always lead to vomiting. Nausea can be short-lived or it can be prolonged. It can be psychological or physical in origin.

Nausea is often referred to as morning sickness. But this term may be misleading as for some pregnant women, nausea is worse in the morning and may ease up over the next course of the day. But it may occur at any time and for a few, it may last an entire day, too!

Even a mild case of nausea will make you feel uncomfortable and leave you miserable. It’s always better to seek medical attention from your health care practitioner and look for options of relief.

When Does Nausea Start in Pregnancy?

Nausea is common during the first three months of pregnancy. It usually starts around first 6 weeks of pregnancy but it can begin as early as 4 weeks, too. The feeling is very unpleasant but it generally ends as the pregnant woman moves into the second trimester. But for a few, it may continue into the third trimester, too.

Nausea at the End of Pregnancy

Nausea may completely disappear after the first trimester or reoccur again in the third trimester. During the third trimester of pregnancy, the baby is growing in a rapid pace and at the same time, it’s depleting your body from essential vitamins and minerals. The baby is also fighting for space in the abdominal area, which further causes internal pressure and discomfort which lead to nausea.

Nausea Before Labor

3rd trimester nausea may be due to labor or many other reasons like heartburn, morning sickness or even preeclampsia hypertension, of which nausea is a common symptom. It is a sign that labor is right around the corner.

While one shouldn’t take it as a definite sign of labor, but it’s one of the symptoms that many women experience before giving birth. If it’s a sign of labor then you need to look for other symptoms like diarrhea, backache, pelvic pressure. So, it’s always better to talk to your doctor who will recommend the next steps.

Remedies for 3rd Trimester Nausea

When you encounter nausea during the third trimester, it’s an indication that pregnancy hormones are elevated, which is a sign of pregnancy is moving forward. Laura Riley, MD,  author of You and Your Baby: Healthy Eating During Pregnancy says, “About 25 percent of pregnant women who have healthy pregnancies never experience nausea, but for those who do, morning sickness usually lasts throughout the first trimester.”

The reasons for experiencing 3rd trimester nausea are greater as a side effect of birth control pills, suffer from motion sickness, have female relatives who endured morning sickness or are pregnant with multiples. But with lifestyle and dietary changes, one can provide relief in most of the cases. Let’s check out!

Some Simple Precautions

1. Eat smaller meals. Yes, divide your meals into small six parts throughout the day instead of three. This helps you to stay full and allows you to never let yourself get hungry. Dips and spikes in your blood sugar level may add to the uneasiness. This is also one of the reasons why women feel nauseous in the morning. So, keep healthy snacking when you’re hungry to avoid morning sickness.

2. Try to avoid eating right before bedtime. This may help you avoid heartburn that develops at the night.

3. Avoid eating spicy food that triggers nausea. But it’s better to listen to your body and eat what you love the most. “Eat what makes you feel better, or at least not worse,” says Melinda Johnson, MS, RD, a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association. As long as you drink plenty of water and take prenatal vitamins, the baby will be fine.

4. Say no to caffeine and exercise regularly but take an equal amount of rest, too.

5. Acupuncture is also a safe and effective alternative method to treat nausea. It is a method of insertion of needles to living tissues, especially for remedial purposes. Most women require two or three treatments a week through the first trimester.

6. You can also distract yourself by listening to soft music when you notice the first signs of nausea.

Inspite of all these methods, if you end up feeling nauseatic, here are a few tips on natural remedies for nausea.

Natural Remedies for 3rd Trimester Nausea

1. Ginger is an antidote. A survey by American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology found that ginger was somewhat helpful in alleviating morning sickness—more so when taken in capsules than in any other form. Ginger tea or ginger ale are the best ways to beat morning sickness.

2. Peppermint is the cold remedy for treating nausea. If your nausea is accompanied by sweats and feeling hot then peppermint is the right choice. You can consume peppermint tea and brew it to the strength that you can tolerate. You can even pour it over ice if hot tea increases nausea.

3. If you’re vomiting, it’s important to stay hydrated in order to replenish the lost electrolytes – minerals such as sodium and potassium that regulate the fluid balance in your body.

So have ice chips, citrus-flavored slush drinks and ginger ale to regain the lost minerals. Also, make sure you have slow and steady sips. If you drink more than two ounces at a time, fluids tend to bypass the tissues and travel directly to the kidneys and bladder.

4. Include herbs to prevent nausea. Lemon and chamomile tea act as a natural medication for nausea.

5. Vitamin B6 is a great vitamin to control nausea. Check with your healthcare practitioner on how much vitamins you should consume. In case you have vitamin deficiency, consume egg yolks, yogurt and whole grains.

3. Avoid going out when it’s too hot outside.
4. Wear loose and light clothing
5. Avoid hot drinks and spicy food
6. Avoid caffeinated tea as that may increase your blood pressure if you’re already experiencing hot flashes.

Leg Pain During Pregnancy Third Trimester

Pain may occur in every part of your body during the third trimester. From your back to your hips to your stomach, there are many places that will be sore and uncomfortable. You may start to develop leg cramping or the restless leg syndrome during the third syndrome.

Cramping may occur due to too much phosphorus or too little calcium in the body. Restless leg syndrome or the feeling wherein you need to constantly move your leg can be a symptom of iron or folic acid. It’s better to contact your doctor when you have an uncomfortable sensation in the legs. Your doctor may conduct certain blood tests to determine the cause of restless leg syndrome.

Upset Stomach During Pregnancy 3rd Trimester

Diarrhea during pregnancy is one of the unfortunate discomforts you may experience. One of the major causes of stomach upsets or diarrhea is the change in diet when you’re pregnant. Or you may be sensitive to a particular food during pregnancy. Hormonal changes are also one of the major reasons. These changes may slow down your digestive process, which in turn leads to diarrhea.

In most cases, diarrhea will clear up on its own within a couple of days. The best way to avoid diarrhea is to stay hydrated. Make sure you consume loads of water along with lime juice and replace the electrolytes you’ve lost. The water will help replenish your lost fluids and the juice will help to replenish your potassium levels.

If your diarrhea doesn’t clear up by itself then you need to contact your doctor. If it’s caused by bacteria or parasites, you may need antibiotics.
