What Makes a Good Tip?

A strong news tip will have many different components. Firstly, a news tip should be newsworthy and interest all readers. It should not be biased or personal, for example, focusing on a single one-time experience. Secondly, a strong evidence or proper documentation is essential. Just having a hunch or speculating does not make a good tip. A good news tip should understand the issue, its solution or results. It should articulate a clear and understandable problem with real-world consequences. Be as specific as you can.

We will be reviewing your tips and messages regularly, but because of the volume of tips we receive, we cannot promise each will receive an individual response. There are multiple ways for you to submit tips. Each method provides different levels of protection, so we encourage you to look at each to be certain of the pros and cons of what you’re selecting. To maintain your anonymity, we will respond to your news tips using the same method they were submitted in. For example, if you submit a tip to us using email, we will reply to you using email only.

Email

Feel free to send us encrypted or unencrypted emails. Mailvelope is a browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that makes it easy to use Pretty Good Privacy or PGP. PGP is an encryption software that allows you to send encrypted documents, messages or emails.  Mailvelope will not encrypt metadata such as sender, recipient, subject or time stamp. This metadata will be available to your email provider. It will only encrypt the contents of your email.
