If my only critique on Gaurav Gupta’s previous collection was that he was getting too comfortable with his signature designs, this time around, the designer got out of his comfort zone and designed a collection around a unique theme that’s challenging yet socially, or rather, environmentally conscious – global warming.

Gaurav Gupta’s latest Autumn Winter 2016 collection is titled ‘Melt’, and is inspired by a “melancholic apocalypse” that the world would succumb to if we, Indians, don’t take actions to reduce global warming. In short, it was inspired by Delhi pollution. A challenging theme to translate into fashion, sure, considering how environmentally taxing and wasteful high fashion is considered to be.

With this theme, Gupta endeavoured to create a near-zero waste collection that drapes the entire width of fabric into each outfit, minimizing waste. The colors palette is also inspired by fire and ash – flaming blue, blazing orange, deep coal black and ash grey.

If you thought the silhouettes would be as asymmetric and as dance-y as the flames or their fabrics would employ burnt techniques to imitate the molten look, you’d be disappointed, as was I. But I love the asymmetric embroidery at the top halves of the gowns, that gravitates downwards, reminiscent of molten silver to me. My favorite dress in the collection is a grey gown with sheer top, pockets and embroidery:
