Gaurav Gupta Winter 2015 Collection was presented as the grand finalé at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter Festive 2015. The collection’s theme was ‘Sculpt‘, sponsored by Lakmé for its high-definition ‘sculpt’ makeup collection. Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan played the muse for the collection, and walked the show in a showstopper black gown.
The fashion show stage at Mehboob Studio was a sculpture in itself, with the designs suiting the theme. The silhouettes included floor-length gowns, pencil dresses, mini-dresses and jumpsuits. The designs had striking elements like sheer panels and sculptural elements like layered collars and ruffles. Gaurav Gupta’s signature sequins were also seen in some of the gowns.
The looks were completed with bold red lips and sculpted buns and top-knots. While jewelry was noticeably missing, the shoes created a statement with interesting play of planes.
Gupta’s colletion does have a few interesting and flattering pieces, but sadly, showstopper Kareena Kapoor Khan’s gown is not one of them.
Gupta does go for originality and steers clear of his layered silhouettes in metallic shades that mix sheer with silk and have dominated some of his latest collections. Scuptural designs are usually expected from Rahul Mishra, but this time Gupta manages to pull it off in a very Gaurav Gupta-esque way.
These silhouettes have possibly been designed keeping in mind a celebrity clientèle because some of these gowns are not wearable or flattering for an average woman. Gupta’s colletion does have a few interesting and flattering pieces, but sadly, showstopper Kareena Kapoor Khan’s gown is not one of them. The sheer panel that goes just below the belly button, the single sleeve and the mermaid-style skirt does little for her figure. She does look gorgeous neck up, though.
My favorite piece from the collection is an ivory sculpted mini-dress with 3D-layers that swirl around the dress and rise up through a shoulder up to the model’s ear. A sculpted gown in white with black 3D layers and a full-sleeved red gown with a sculpted collar-detail are also beauties.
