Salwar Suit Trends for 2020

1. Sharara & Garara

(L to R) Reynu Taandon, Divya Reddy, Payal Singhal

Sharara and garara are still the new favorites! These Mughal garments with slight nuances find the top spot in the salwar suit trends for 2020. Shararas are fluid bottoms that fit at the waist and flare out towards the bottom, whereas gararas are close up to the knee and then flare out, the joint is often decorated with a piping or lace.

We are seeing shararas embellished with zari, sequins, stones, and broad borders. Whereas, gararas were adorned with frilled bands at the joints to provide more flare at the bottom.

You can also pair these fit and flare bottoms with short ornate kurtis or long straight kurtis. Dupatta or dupattaless? Totally your choice! Besides, they give you a taller appearance hence are perfect for comparatively shorter people.

If you are organizing an online dandiya celebration this Navratri then these flowy bottoms would compliment you and your dance moves in the best way! Finally, wear matching bangles and heavy earrings to complete the look.

2. Cloud Hems

Gone are the days when we had straight hems, of late cloud hems are everywhere! We first spotted this style in Dior Spring 2016 collection by Raf Simons at Paris Fashion Week; and these hems are becoming staple for all the Indian designer collections this season. Dupattas, borders, sleeves, or bottoms these semi-circular hems are literally everywhere.

We noticed cloud hems of different sizes, big and small semi-circles. Dupattas with clouded hems are a part of major designer collections but it’s not limited to that, cloud hems were spotted on suit borders, palazzo hems, and also on the lining of sleeves. There are two obvious reasons to go for these. Firstly, it’ll give you a break from the age-old straight hems. And secondly, it’s treeenndding!

3. Bandhgala

This season we’re seeing many suits with badhgalas or high round necks hence it’s in the top three salwar suit trends for 2020. These menswear-inspired suits having high necks and full sleeves were seen in different prints and patterns. Such suits were lightly embellished which balanced out the high neck, giving it a rather casual look.

I personally like the navy-blue suit by Sabyasachi with triangular prints and a multicolored border. Bandhgalas enhance the contour of your upper body giving you a sleek look. You can pair these with matching palazzos, parallel pants and dupatta. You can pick these for your day outs or formal Zoom meets. Be your grooviest self by dressing up in one of these!

4. Kalidaar Kurta

Kurtas which are fitted up to your waist and flare out from there, frock-style, falling down to the knee or slightly above are known as kalidaar kurtas. This season we noticed heavily embellished kalidaar kurtas adorned with zari, moti, lace, and lighter kurtas with polka prints and linear patterns.

Kalidaar kurta has a belted structure that will enhance your waist and hips. While it’s a good pick for rectangular body types, pear-shaped people can avoid these kurtas. You can pair kalidaar kurtas with #1 in our salwar suit trends for 2020 – shararas and gararas! You can wear these elegant attires for your evening functions with family and friends.

5. Built-in Dupatta & Jackets

Ever missed out on wearing a suit just cause you couldn’t find a matching dupatta? Eh, dupatta even though an essential component, can be a real pain at times. But don’t worry about it, this season our designers have you covered! We saw a variety of drool-worthy dupatta-less suits in the designer collections. Suits with built-in dupattas and attached jackets are the creative outcome of the western influence.

We noticed suits with dupattas attached to the torso and sleeves flaring out as dupattas. These slightly embellished suits are comfortable to wear and look trendy at the same time. It gives you a modern look while grounding in the tradition. You can wear these to your evening parties or get-togethers. This is one of my favorite salwar suit trends for 2020, less hassle much wow!

6. Crop Straight Pants

Bid adieu to your regular bottoms, the crop is the new cool! We saw suits matched with crop pants ending slightly above the ankles. Furthermore, we noticed both ornate and plain crop pants. The tiny embellishments such as borders, lace, and stones added to the beauty of these crop pants thereby enriching their look. Recently, Katrina Kaif was spotted in a pink suit with matching crop pants worn with black shades and jootis.

Crop pant is surely a good pick for regular wear. Moreover, they are highly breathable as they don’t cut close to your body, super comfy yet very modest. You can pair these with straight long suits with matching borders. You can also go for suits with front slits or peplum style. Pair it up with dupattas and flat jootis and get going for your meetings.

7. Sheer Bottoms

See-through clothing is on the go! Sheer fabric is the semi-transparent or mesh fabric that is partially see-through. Sheer bottoms became trendy after Spring 2017 western collections where sheer skirts were one of the most trending styles. We are ecstatic to spot sheers in Indian designer collections this season.

Sheer chooridars embellished with zari work and stones, paired with matching suits and dupattas are a sure head-turner! We also saw sheer palazzos with cloud hems and palazzos lined with sheer borders. You can wear these with a range of suits such as drape, long, anarkali, or kalidaar. I love the dusty green suit by Shyamal & Bhumika, with deep plunge neck and sheer bottom. If you wish to go ethnic but show off your beautiful legs at the same time then this is the perfect fit!

8. Straight Long & Chooridar

Straight long suits with chooridars have been trending for a while now and yet again it made it to the salwar suit trends for 2020. As the name suggests, these are long suits that end a little above the ankle with high side slits. Straight kurtas embellished with thread work, tassels, and various prints are plentiful this season. Broad borders, neutral colors, cloud hems, and fringes also go hand in hand with the above.

(L to R) Sue Mue, Sabyasachi, Payal Singhal

I am loving the off-white suit by Payal Singhal with tiny tassels attached throughout and intricately designed border paired with sky blue dupatta. Not a new concept but straight long kurtas throw a confident and bold look. In addition to that they even make you look taller! You can quickly grab one of these when expecting guests or relatives over at your place. Also great for office parties.

9. Slip Style

Slip style refers to the suits which are identical to slips, having a thin band or noodle strap on the shoulder. Recently, slips are gaining back popularity and 90s style slip dresses have been ruling the western runways since 2018. Now they are taking over salwar suits too!

We noticed long and embellished short slips. Longer slips matched with palazzos or shararas and shorter slips paired with straight pants or dhoti pants. Celebrities such as Sonakshi Sinha and Juhi Chawla were spotted in slip style suits.

(L to R) Anita Dongre, Eka, Payal Singhal

Slips are perfect wear for the humid climate. If you’re not a huge fan of heavy ethnic clothing then slip suits are your getaway. It’ll give you ample opportunity to flash your well-toned arms. You can pair these ornated slip suits with comparatively lighter dhoti pants or matching palazzos. Team it up with matching dupatta, accessories, and bangles to finalize the look.

10. Statement Sleeves

(L to R) Shyamal & Bhumika, Sabyasachi, Payal Singhal

We couldn’t help but notice the diversity of the sleeves in this year’s collection. Ruffled sleeves, bell sleeves, sleeves adorned with fringes, tassels, chooridar sleeves, sleeves with cloud hems and so much more. Thus you can choose from a gamut of styles! Similar to the baby pink suit by Sabyasachi, we are noticing sleeves that suffice for the dupattas.

While adding to the flamboyance these sleeves are modernizing the predominant styles at the same time. Suits with unique sleeves are a good choice for a number of occasions such as tea parties or online meetings. Wherever you get to flaunt your hands, let your sleeve do the talking!

11. Ankle-Length Anarkali

anju-modi-sue-mue-tarun-tahiliani-ankle-length-anarkali-salwar-suit-tren....jpg
(L to R) Anju Modi, Sue Mue, Tarun Tahiliani

Trends come and go but anarkalis are certainly here to stay. At least for now! Evidently, anarkalis have been finding regular spots in many of the trend forecasts, yet again they are a part of the salwar suit trends for 2020. We are seeing anarkalis with broad borders, prints, heavy neck designs along with dark-colors, ample flare, and full sleeves. Pair them with palazzos, or matching chooridars and dupattas. I would choose to go dupattaless for casual outings but prefer picking one while attending weddings. I’m liking the coffee brown anarkali by Anju Modi with a contrasting peach dupatta.
