Hey gorgeous! It’s a new year, new you, and of course, (in the post-Covid revenge-shopping era), a new closet too! Well, whether or not shopping is in the agenda, a fashionista is always interested in checking out what’s latest in the fashion world. So that’s why we’re kicking off this year with the latest skirt trends for the upcoming season.

Latest Skirt Trends for Spring Summer 2021 (SS21)

Well, Covid put kind of a damper on things last year. So forget fashion week, obviously, lots of fashion houses didn’t even have proper collections. But most got creative and either showcased in-house shows or did photo-shoots, or, in Moschino’s case, got puppet-dolls to wear their clothes for a make-believe fashion show. Bravo, because we always wanted to see how designer clothing would look like on ceramic dolls. Not that I could afford it anyway.

So as always, to round up this list of latest skirt trends, we did our research, checked out all the latest designer collections and the latest skirts in them. And boy were there skirts to check out! Even in this post-apoclyptic era, we could still spot so many new (but mostly old) trends and very cute skirt designs!

So let’s check them all out!

1. Skirt Set

Forget mix and match – this year is all about the pre-planned, pre-designed outfits. Almost all famous design houses had skirt sets in their SS21 collections, making it the #1 among latest skirt trends for this season. We saw all sorts of sets too, from party-ready skirt-suits to matchy work-wear prints to casual fun sets.

Coach had a menswear inspired skirt-suit, styled in a very androgynous yet informal way. Zuhair Murad and Moschino had peplum skirt-sets with lapel jackets, one with lovely floral prints and another in gold. ODLR had a school-uniform-inspired pleated skirt paired with a pussy-bow top – very preppy. And my favorite, Alexander McQueen had a midi-skirt paired with a matching tank-top/extreme-crop-top combo with a bustier print.

2. Flared Midi

Move over, odd skirt styles of 2020s. The classic old-school pleated midi is back in the game. We saw different lengths. Most designers had calf-length midi skirts in their collections. However, we also saw just-above-the ankle ones.

Prada had a beautiful silk flared skirt paired with turtleneck top in a new color combination of pale lemon, pencil grey and black. Fendi had a white-on-white A-line skirt top set worn with pink bag and boots. Balenciaga’s head-to-toe black outfit with midi skirt and thing-long high-neck top was very wearable.

Elie Saab stole the show with a flared kimono-style peplum top paired with a pleated midi with a thigh-slit. Alexander McQueen had a wow-worthy pink tulle midi paired with a black biker jacket-style peplum top with flounce sleeves. Such a statement look.

3. Asymmetric Front Slit

We’ve already seen a front slit in skirts before, and even the slight-on-the-side slit. Let’s call it the thigh slit. But this season, what’s new about it is that we’re even seeing angled slashes and wraparound style skirts with asymmetrically designed slits. All very cool and very sexy.

We saw slits mostly in midi skirts, so go for something either knee/ calf length or just-below-the-knee. These latest skirt trends are all about casual elegance. The slit isn’t anything too extreme, so we’re not worried about new types of underwear or too much skin-show. The ideal case is an A-line midi skirt with a mid-thigh-high slit. Pair it with a lighter shade of the same color and matching shoes and you’re all set with the Spring 2021 fashion!

5. Large Front Pockets

Now, that’s the kind of trend we at ShilpaAhuja.com love (or at least I do). I’ve talked at multiple occasions about how uncomfortable bags are, and even Audrey O. renounced handbags last year in favor of large pockets. Honestly, we women don’t get pockets in our clothes just so brands can sell more handbags.

Thankfully, large pockets are fashionable in skirts, and that too right at the front. Hopefully they’re real pockets and not those fake kind that don’t even open. We spotted mini-skirts with front pockets, very fun. This is one of the most wearable among all latest skirt trends.

Some designers had a single pocket in the center, and some had two. Max Mara even had a large big one on a striped maxi skirt, paired with a button-down with slashed sleeves. My favorite one is by Prada, which was a mini-skirt in black with a large fanny-pack-inspired pocket in the middle and a buckle-strap hemline, that’s a total show-stealer. It was paired with a V-neck sweater over a full-sleeved slashed top and pants, too. Plus purple pumps! I’m calling it 2021.

5. Faux Wraparound

Here’s a super modern trend that we spotted in skirts. The idea of a wraparound skirt is very summery. So sure enough, we saw many styles in summer outfits, paired with criss-cross tops and front-slit tops. But the cool thing is that designers even came up with wraparound style skirts in heavy fabrics like wool for winter/spring outfits.

The faux wraparound is, as the name suggests, a skirt that looks like it’s wrapped, but is actually stitched and ready to pull on. One of the top latest skirt trends for Spring 2021, this one is sure to be on the bucket-list of every celeb & influencer. Go for a midi-skirt in this style, and match with a top in the same color, and even throw in a belt.

6. High Waist Mini

Not that this classic style ever went out of fashion, but it’s back, so to say. The high-waist mini skirt is, personally, one of my favorite skirt silhouettes, because it works very well on most body types and even makes you look taller. And thinner. Yay.

This year, we’ll be seeing the mid-thigh micro-mini skirt that starts well above the navel. Pair it with a crop top to show off your abs. Or wear it with a bodysuit. For the late spring days, you can pair your skirt with a crop jacket or a light coat. And add statement boots in a contrasting color.

8. Statement Skirt

The statement skirt is one of the latest skirt trends, again! And we’re not complaining. This year, designers even paired it with a statement top, too. Among the unique skirt designs, we saw novelty both in silhouettes and surface work. The exposed thong trend is definitely back (no!), but the good thing is that designers worked it up within the cut of the skirt itself. Like a hip-bone cut-out. Now that’s sexy.

D&G had a ton of cute skirts, some slashed, some double-fabricked, some patchworked or bubble, all in bright colors. My fave one was a miniskirt embellished with all sorts of fabric buttons. Balmain had a draped look with asymmetric hem , paired with pagoda shouldered top. And Versace had a bunch of ruffled skirts, with loads of flounce, particularly cute in a mini-skirt.

8. Art Patterns

The artsy look is back, and we never had enough of it in 2010s anyway. We saw all types of artistic prints and patterns, from pop art to Renaissance-inspired painting prints, to small handmade watercolor prints to mixed self-design fabrics. In fact, they were so varied I felt odd putting them under the same umbrella. Nonetheless, here they are.

Pair them with a plain black top if confused, like the Tom Ford look. Or a matching set like Burberry. If youre feeling bold, wear them with another artsy top in the same color family with a different pattern, like Dior and Dolce Gabbana here.

9. Mixed Fabric

We saw the multimedia trend last season, and I loved it! This season, the designers have toned it down a tiny bit to give us mixed fabric skirts. More wearable but still quite a statement.

Dolce & Gabbana had the most skirts in this style, with patchwork, mixed fabric stripes and other indescribable things. Tom Ford mixed cheetah print with florals. Chanel had a look that gave the appearance of it by pairing a long button-up with a mini. And Versace mixed chiffon with satin in different colors.

10. Sheer

Oh god, I’ve always hated the sheer skirt trend (although it’s better than the sheer pants trend), anyway both are useless. And sure enough, after seasons of complaining, here it is again! Grr.

Although we did spot some interesting looks, so let’s review my favorite one, while we’re at it. Valentino had a handmade mesh made out of knotted leather strips, embellished with leather applique.

11. Logo

The logo trend is another one from the old pile, but this season we spotted some twist in it. The new logo skirts don’t work like those wannabe sweatshirts with large logos. Instead, designers got creative and presented the logos in new ways.

Dior and Balmain created midi skirts with repeating logo patterns. While Dior’s skirt used the new Dior logo in really small print, almost making it look like a geometric pattern, Balmain used their signature pattern in a shimmer-over-sheer fabric. Chanel and Prada played with their logos in unique ways too.
