With navy looks and French girl style, here’s what I think is the style lesson by Maria Grazia Chiuri from Dior Fall Winter 2017 Ready-to-Wear Collection!

Usually when most people think of modern Dior, they think of John Galliano’s Dior – bold and voluminous silhouettes with cinched waists. Raf Simons with his minimalism strove to steer Dior towards the opposite end of the runway spectrum – well, opposite is a strong word but you get the gist. And now with Maria Giazia Chiuri, we’re getting to see her own new direction.
For her, navy is the color of Fall Winter 2017. As one of Christian Dior’s favorites, the androgynous, mysterious hue had its inspiration coming from twentieth century paintings.
Overall, the collection was a compilation of wardrobe staples – wearable separates adorned with simple yet chic accessories making easy-to-recreate monochromatic looks. The silhouettes included wool coats, midi-dresses, crop pants and co-ord pant-sets. Many different accessories were seen, just like Dior Spring 2017 collection – slim chokers, single earrings and cross-body bags were paired with some looks. Other looks had hand-held bags, pendant chains, bracelets, slim belts and sunglasses. Leather berets and over-the-knee boots accompanied all the looks, making the collection seem like the wardrobe of a modern French girl.
Hair and makeup added to the “French girl” look – loose, carefree waves on shiny, untangled hair coupled with barely-there makeup.
And then I saw jeans – how often do you see jeans in a Dior collection? When was the last time we saw jeans in a Dior collection? I can’t remember! Low-waist, unwashed, comfort-fit, dark denims with unstitched, folded hems were paired with navy button-up blouses and logo jackets.
Sweaters, both graphic and plain were seen, along with sheer skirts worn over boy-shorts, just like the previous collection – which is already becoming a trend this year.
Denim blue looks came towards the end of the collection along with white ones. We saw velvet dresses, sheer tops and sequin maxi dresses, embellished evening dresses with some nice accessories – box clutches, collar necklaces and sheer tights.
Generally, the style lesson by Maria Grazia Chiuri seems to be this: wear navy, wear monochromatic outfits, stick to classic and sleek accessories; unripped jeans is back, and don’t straighten your hair this Fall/ Winter!
