Manish Malhotra’s latest couture collection was presented at India Couture Week 2016. Titled, ‘The Persian Story’, the collection had every bit of the glam factor you would expect from the famed fashion designer.

Focusing on the bridal couture, the collection included traditional silhouettes like wedding lehengas and groom’s sherwanis, and mixed them with western pieces like strapless gowns, cropped blouses and long jackets.

Silk and velvet were combined with tulle and satin. Intricate embroidery and threadwork added the richness. The color palette included all the shades of deep red – scarlet, crimson, burgundy and maroon – with tan, black, grape, grey and even some pastels including pale blue and ivory. Here’s a layered silk strapless gown worn with a matching scarf and a heavy necklace. One of my favorite looks from this collection, it uses all shades of deep red:

The collection’s beauty lies in the intricacy and motifs of its embroideries. Some of the lehengas had nearly every inch covered in threadwork, and paired them with plain cholis or borders for a play in negative and positive space. I can see this style by Manish Malhotra of embroidered and plain panels becoming a trend this year.

Another interesting theme was the use of western elements juxtaposed onto traditional ethnic silhouettes. The fashion show description called it “the exquisite combination of traditional embroidery and progressive silhouette.” An off-shoulder choli was paired with a red lehenga with a long train, worn by showstopper and Bollywood actress, Deepika Padukone. Another one of my favorites was an off-white saree (again with a long train), worn with a tulle blouse with bell-sleeves:
