What are Cloud Eggs?
Also known as eggs in a nest, cloud eggs are new breakfast trend that’s taking the social media world by storm. It originated in France ages ago and is traditionally called oeufs a la neige. The dish resembles a fluffy white cloud with a yolk in the center. And the best part? It only requires 3 ingredients and 6 minutes. Yes, that’s right, six minutes is all it takes to Instagram-worthy fluffy baked eggs.
How to Make Cloud Eggs?
Like I already mentioned, cloud eggs are super easy so even a beginner can execute them with ease. I mean, even I could do it. So you can, too. Read our super easy and super quick eggs in a cloud recipe below! And did they live up to their reputation? Keep reading to find out!
Easy Cloud Egg Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 egg
- Salt & pepper
- Herbs (optional)
The first step to making eggs on a cloud is to separate the egg white and yolk. Make sure to do it carefully and don’t end up breaking the yolk, ’cause we need it for later. Using a large bowl and an electric hand mixer, whisk the eggs until stiff peaks form or until it turns into a meringue-like consistency.
You can use a manual whisk too but believe me, it’ll take around ten minutes of constant whipping and leave you with a sore arm. Or if you’re doing it with someone else, you can take turns whisking. Then, season it with a pinch of salt and other herbs like thyme, rosemary, etc and gently fold it all in.
Once that’s done and the consistency looks like the picture shown above, get ready to start making the egg cloud. For this, you’ll need a baking tray. In case you don’t have one, you can use any other oven-safe tray but do make sure to line it with parchment paper or brush some oil so it doesn’t stick. Place the beaten egg white fluff on the tray and create a small dent in the middle for the egg yolks, which we’ll put later.
Pop it in the oven gently and bake the egg whites for 4 minutes at 450° F (232° C). Once time’s up, the egg cloud should have browned edges on top – an indication that it’s cooked. The last thing you want is raw, uncooked eggs. However, do make sure you take it out before it starts turning a dark brown color. Overcooked or burnt cloud eggs are just as bad as under cooked ones. Just a slight golden browning on the top of the egg cloud is what you want.
Now take it out of the oven and place the yolk in the hollow we created earlier. Put the egg white fluffs back in the oven and let it bake for another 2 minutes or until the yolk is completely cooked. Serve on top of toasted bread!
Cloud Eggs – Worth It or Not?
As beautiful as eggs on a cloud look, their taste doesn’t live up to it. It’s more of a personal preference ’cause I’m very particular about the textures of food I eat. And airy, fluffy eggs aren’t my absolute favorite. I found cloud eggs a bit tasteless and it disappeared in my mouth the second I put it in. The egg white puffs kind of reminded me of cotton candy but without the sweetness. That doesn’t mean they were bad or anything. They’re just not for me. I’m sure these egg clouds would taste better with added flavoring like parmesan and herbs. But, the runny yolk on top was delicious!
So, I’d say this cloudy egg white recipe would be great if you wanna wow your guests at a party or just wanna try something new instead of boring omelettes or fried eggs. But if you have a very picky palate like me, try it with extra seasoning and scallions to improve the texture. Either way, cloud eggs would look fabulous on your Instagram feed!
