The Theme
The Coach Spring 2019 collection was in tune with the design sensibilities of the brand, reminiscent of the American prairie landscape. Just like we’ve seen in previous Coach collections, the SS19 featured looks that were well-worn and easy to style.
In fact, I’d even go as far as to say they were scruffy, made out of, as the fashion house calls it, “scavenged and salvaged American heirlooms… This season, the collection was about assembling and reconstructing the craft and spirit of the American look.”
The Collection
So, keeping that in mind, we saw loads of peasant looks. Clothes included oversized sweaters, shirt dresses, tiered maxi skirts. Outerwear included oversized leather jackets and hoodies, denim coats.
The color palette started off slow. Nudes, off whites, beige, sand and grey made up the mellow tones. The show soon moved on to deep colors like teal, black and dark denim. Shades of white and brown were common – cinnamon, biscuit, cocoa – you name it.
Faded texture on jackets and coats added to the deconstructed, scruffy look. Bomber jackets and leather pants were common in the few menswear looks we saw.
Surface Work
Different types of surface techniques were used, especially on leather. Mostly patchwork with studs and fringes were seen on jackets, coats and sometimes trousers. On other fabrics, ruffles were very prominent on necklines of tops and dresses. We saw crochet trimmings on dresses.
Lots of hoodies, sweaters and sweatshirts featured embroidered patchwork and graphic prints. According to the fashion show description, “A collaboration with Disney recontextualizes and remixes beloved American pop culture icons, creating relics for the future.”
Accessories
Accessories were native American inspired, too, to match the theme. Small floral prints were paired with equally small accessories like multiple rings, bracelets and layered chain necklaces. Other jewelry items included, chain chokers and long, single earrings. Symbols were aplenty too – small Ojo, or evil eye, crescent moon, forks and fans. and Butterfly sunglasses and small fringe bags were the other accessories we spotted. Fringe booties completed the looks.
Overall, the Coach Spring 2019 collection isn’t far from the last few we’ve seen from the house of Coach. Yet wearable, and consisted lots of wardrobe basics in simple tones, inspirations of which I’m sure we’ll soon see at Urban Outfitters, GAP and the likes! Either way, one thing is certain – the American youth can get away without brushing their hair for yet another season!
