Ayurveda or Ayurvedic medicine is an ancient and traditional system of Indian medicine. Highly popular as the science of using all-natural methods to achieve holistic health, the word ‘Ayurveda‘ actually combines two Sanskrit words ‘ayu’ meaning age and ‘veda’ meaning knowledge.

It is a well-organized system of traditional health care, both preventive and curative. Today the majority of people use this system with modern medicine. However, ayurveda has its roots in the ancient Indian  history, including its use by our older generations as a form of a beauty treatment.

According to me, ayurvedic beauty treatment is the best kind of treatment there is. The regular beauty products we use can be harsh on our skin and can even cause long term damage, especially for people dealing with sensitive skin like me. That’s why I started using ayurvedic beauty tips and natural remedies years ago. And once I did, I realized why the world is crazy about it. It has immensely improved my skin. Even celebrities like Priyanka Chopra Jonas talked a lot about her skincare remedies that involve natural ingredients on Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar.

Skin Types

Before we get into the ayurvedic beauty tips, let’s first talk about different skin types, since you’ll need to identify your own skin type before you decide which remedies work best for you.

There are four skin types.

types of skin

Normal skin

Normal skin is neither too dry nor too oily. It’s mostly balanced, even though it may be slightly oily or dry depending on the skin care routine or weather. People with normal skin don’t get dry patches easily.

Dry skin

Dry skin can be characterized by a lack of moisture on the outermost layer of the skin. The skin tends to get flaky, itchy, and dry patches may appear in certain cases.

Oily skin

When the sebaceous gland in the skin produces excessive sebum, the skin tends to get very oily. A layer of oil can be seen on the skin, especially on the face and it can feel sticky. People with oily skin are more prone to acne.

Combination skin

Combination skin is oily in some areas and dry in other areas. Mostly, the T-zone, i.e. forehead, nose, and chin, may be slightly or very oily, leaving the rest of the face comparatively dry.

Other than these 4 skin types, there’s also another type:

Sensitive skin

Sensitive skin can be a little tricky to deal with. Such skin type tends to have dry patches on the skin and can be easily flushed. The use of most beauty products can leave a stinging or burning sensation on the skin. People with sensitive skin can oftentimes see red patches due to allergic reactions.

Note before you try these remedies:

It is very important to know your skin type and which remedies work best for you. The ayurvedic beauty tips I am sharing work wonders for me. Even though the ingredients are all-natural, they can still cause breakouts or rashes in case you are allergic to them. Some ingredients or remedies may cause a temporary pinkish-ness, depending on your skin type; this is usually harmless.

If you’re unsure of an ingredient, do a patch test on the inside of your wrist. If you experience any irritation from any of the ingredients you use then wash it off and cleanse your face immediately. Discontinue ingredients if you know they’re causing an allergic reaction and see a dermatologist.

Simple Ayurvedic Beauty Tips for Skin

You all must have heard from your mothers and grandmothers about homemade remedies they used, but not all remedies work for every skin type. Certain ingredients are a complete no-no, while others are a blessing. Let me reveal all the ayurvedic beauty tips step by step covering all skin types.

1.   Cleanse:

Cleansing your face regularly is very crucial. It helps to get rid of dirt, excess oil, dead cells, and makeup. If the face is not clean, it may lead to breakouts. Cleansing also prepares the skin to be more receptive to the ingredients that you are going to nourish it with.

Method:

Dampen your face. Take a few spoons of milk in a bowl. Dip a cotton pad in it and gently clean your face. Lightly dab the cotton pad over your face, do not rub. Then rinse it off.

Milk is a great cleanser and moisturizer. It nourishes the skin and leaves it soft, clean, and supple. This method suits all skin types.

2.   Exfoliate:

Exfoliation is often forgotten as a part of the regular skin care routine, but it is essential. Exfoliation gets rid of dead skin cells and the dirt that is accumulated in the pores. These ayurvedic beauty tips brighten the face by revealing a younger and healthier layer of the skin. Plus a bit of massage that exfoliation requires also helps improve the skin’s blood flow, making it glow.

Method:

For normal skin: Combine a teaspoon of ground oats, milk, and honey.

Dry skin: Combine a teaspoon of milk and ground almond.

Oily skin: Combine a teaspoon of sugar (small crystals) and honey.

Combination skin: Combine a teaspoon of milk and semolina seeds.

Select the exfoliator according to your skin type. Apply it evenly on the face and gently scrub it in an upward circular motion on your skin for a couple of minutes. Be sure to go over all areas of your face and neck, except the area under your eyes and eyelids. Leave it on for 2-4 minutes and wash your face with cold water.

Precaution: Do not over scrub your face as you may tear the delicate tissues on your skin. Scrub gently, and avoid too much pressure.

3.   Open your pores

It is important to open the pores on your skin before applying any face pack as it will allow your skin to release toxins and soak up all the goodness that you are feeding your skin. Scrubbing already helps open the pores of the skin, but this step will help open them further.

Method: Take a hot towel and put it on your face. This will relax your skin and open your pores. You can also steam your face for a couple of minutes.

4.   Face mask

After you have steamed your skin, it is time to take on some nutrition. Applying a face mask will make your skin radiant and glowing.

facepack for radiant skin

Method:

Take a teaspoon of gram flour and ground orange lentils in a bowl. Add half a teaspoon of powdered rose petals along with a few drops of rose water. Add a pinch of wild turmeric and a quarter teaspoon of sandalwood powder. Mix them. Add 2-3 teaspoons of coconut oil and mix them well. Leave it aside for 10-15 mins.

Now add a few teaspoons of milk in it to make it into a thin paste. Gently apply it on your face. Once it’s dry, dip a cotton pad in some milk and wet your face. Gently massage the face pack in your skin. Wash it with normal water. This remedy can also be called a “Magic Remedy” as it works wonders on all skin types. This is one of the ayurvedic beauty tips with which you’ll be able to see the results very quickly.

Precaution: This face pack can leave the skin a little dry for some, so after washing the face, apply a hydrating moisturizer or you can also apply honey for 5-7 mins and then wash it.

5.   Moisturizer

No beauty treatment is complete without moisturizing. Your freshly revealing and nourished skin will need hydration for lasting radiation.

moisturizer for youthful skin

Method:

Take equal portions of almond oil, olive oil, rose oil, a few drops of vitamin A and vitamin E (depending on the quantity of the oil) and pour it in a glass bottle. Mix them well.

Apply this evenly on your face. The beauty of this oil is that it works amazingly on all skin types (sensitive skin included). If you want to enhance the effect of the oil, then you can use a few drops of Kumkumadi Tailam with it (I’ll share more details below).

If you don’t have rose oil, try using some dried rose petals in olive oil instead. It works just the same. I use this daily before going to bed and I have seen improvement from Day 1. This oil is suitable for all skin types.

Precaution: Do not go out after applying this oil. We recommend that you apply it on a clean face before going to bed.

6.   Lip scrub

When it comes to the lips, we moisturize them, but often forget that exfoliating the lips is equally important to maintain a healthy smooth pout. A lip scrub will remove the dead, chapped skin from the lips, and help the lip balm penetrate deeper into the skin.

Method:

Take 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, 1 tablespoon of honey and 2 tablespoons of brown sugar in a bowl and mix well. Gently scrub your lips in a circular motion for 2-3 minutes. Rinse it off with lukewarm water. Pat dry and apply your lip balm.

7.   Acne

It always pops out at the wrong time, sometimes even leaving scars on the face. Ugh! Acne can happen due to hormonal dis balance, food habits, stress, and skin issues. Using Kumkumadi Tailam and Aloe Vera are my two favorite ways to treat acne.

Kumkumadi Tailam

One of the greatest ayurvedic beauty tips you will ever receive is the use of Kumkumadi Tailam. Kumkumadi tailam is an ayurvedic herb oil that is often used to massage the face and treat acne. It improves skin texture, complexion, gets rid of blemishes, wrinkles, and cures skin issues like acne, scars, and others. Kumkum is another name for saffron which is the main ingredient in preparing this oil. The oil is made from a mix of many herbs and goat’s milk. The oil is usually expensive and we recommend to purchase it from a good brand.

Method:

You can take a few drops of kumkumadi oil and apply it on your face. I usually take the moisturizing oil (mentioned above) in my palm, add a few drops of kumkumadi oil, mix it well and then apply it on my face, hands, and feet. This works best for me and I do so before going to bed. This is because you should totally avoid going out in the sun after applying this oil.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is a plant that can be easily found and is known to be a natural moisturizer. It absorbs into the skin and has hydrating properties. No list of ayurvedic beauty tips is complete without the mention of this amazing plant. It is suitable for oily and acne-prone skin. It is also beneficial for treating dark spots, pigmentation, and sunburns.

Aloe Vera for acne treatment

Method:

I prefer using aloe vera extracts from the plant to the aloe vera gel found in the market. Freshly made extracts are very powerful and have great benefits.

Take an aloe leaf and scoop out the pulp into a bowl. Mash it with the help of a fork or use a blender. Add a few drops of Vitamin C oil to it. Mix well and evenly apply it on your face. Leave it for half an hour. Rinse off with cold water.

Ayurvedic Brands

In recent years, many ayurvedic brands have emerged globally. These brands are proof that beauty treatments can be achieved through herbs found in nature. People have found great results through using such products and the craze for ayurvedic treatment is increasing. Some of these brands include Patanjali, Forest Essentials, Khadi, Mamaearth and Kama Ayurveda.

Ayurvedic-brands-to-try

The ayurvedic industry is growing rapidly. We expect many more ayurvedic brands will be in the market soon, catering to more skin issues and public demand. Sometimes we get so busy with our lives that it becomes difficult to use all the ayurvedic beauty tips using all fresh skin care recipes made at home. In such a case these ayurvedic brands are good to use.

I hope after reading this you will fall in love with home remedies and use the tips in your daily routine. I use all of the above and have seen a massive improvement in my skin. Share with us a selfie of your beautiful radiating skin by tagging us @shilpaahujadotcom!

  2. Tomato, rich in vitamin C and antioxidant properties, also takes special care of your skin. To remove stains, make tomato puree. Then massage it on your skin for 15 minutes and wash off with cold water. You can do this twice a month.
