Atelier Versace Spring 2016 fashion show titled ‘Athletic Couture’ was held as a part of Paris Fashion Week. The collection was as dynamic as promised. It was bold yet feminine, cool yet sophisticated. The silhouettes ranged from everyday-wearable pieces you would dismiss as ready-to-wear at a first glance, to creations so unique that you would recognize them as a part of this collection even years from now.
The collection, well titled, drew inspiration from athletic accessories and apparel like ergonomic lines, silicon panels, straps and shoe-laces and interpreted them into elements of gowns, dresses, jumpsuits, skirts and tuxedos. The most gorgeous was certainly the showstopper outfit worn by Gigi Hadid, which is described “as if exploded, then held together with extravagant knots of Swarovski ropes.”
The makeup was bold, and hair was effortless. Dark black eye shadow dominated the face, which was paired with nude lips.
Yet another interesting gown was black, red and sheer with lines of crystal that represent “shockwaves”, often found on athletic shoes.
Swarovski crystal ropes also made ankle straps in shoes and were knotted to create necklaces, earrings and bracelets, inspired by laces of trainers.
One of my favorite dresses was this sky blue slit maxi dress – the “overwrapped dress” that used trainer hole-like rings and knotted Swarovski ropes for locking in the panels and tying a shoulder strap.
Silicon gel panels and straps like those of performance sportswear were used to hold panels of outfits together – some of it more for aesthetic than functionality. But yes, it is original nonetheless.
“I believe women can be powerful and achieve their dreams while also having great elegance and beauty. This is a collection for all women who walk their own path.” Donatella Versace
