Ah, so glad the season to talk about frozen desserts is here. How to Tell the Good from the Bad & How I Eat Them!
Ice-Cream vs. Gelato vs. Fro-Yo vs. Sorbet vs. Frozen Custard: Table of Differences
| || |
|Milk, cream, sugar, everything, may contain eggs.||Milk with little or no cream. Dense and rich flavors.||Uses yogurt instead of milk/cream, but higher calories, especially with those toppings.||Lactose-free/ Vegan, but high in sugar||Same as ice-cream, but contains egg yolk.|
|Good ice-cream should be of consistent density, fattiness, and neither too soft nor rock solid.||Good gelato should have no added fruit flavors or colors, so it should taste naturally fruity, not overly sugary or look too bright.||Most Fro-Yos are comparable, with a mix of artificial and natural ingredients. Any decent brand will provide consistent fro-yo with a good variety of toppings.||Good sorbet should not be too melty or too frozen. It should be full-bodied and fresh.||Good frozen Custard, just like a good ice-cream, should be consistent in its density, and frozen-ness. It should not be too hard or contain ice-chunks.|
|I like Ben and Jerry’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie and Haagen-Dazs Belgian Chocolate the best, I store their tiny cups in my fridge sometimes, and a few local stores in each city I’ve lived, such as Toscanini’s and Christina’s in Cambridge, MA||The best gelato I’ve ever eaten has to be dark chocolate with strawberry in Grom, Rome and dark chocolate with mango in Gelateria Vivaldi, Florence. It’s to die for!! Can I go back there? Like, now?||I love PinkBerry’s fro-yo, no surprises there, because who doesn’t?! I like their watermelon the best with lots of toppings- crunchy chocolate balls, mangoes, watermelon, brownies… Om nom nom!||I love Haagen-Dazs sorbet, all the awesome fruity berry flavors! Their peach, lemon and mango combos are the best!||I haven’t eaten frozen custard much outside, because my mom makes the best one ever!! 🙂|
|267 calories in 1 cup of vanilla ice-cream||204 calories in half-cup (recommended serving) of vanilla gelato||214 calories in 1 cup of plain frozen yogurt||184 calories in 1 cup of sorbet||200 calories in 1 cup of frozen-custard|
Ice-Cream vs. Gelato vs. Fro-Yo vs. Sorbet vs. Frozen Custard: The Winner (According to Me!)
So after much careful consideration, I’ve reached the decision for what I like the best amongst all frozen sweet treats – and the winner of this yummy war is – drum-rolls please – GELATO! Woo-hoo! It just seems that gelato is fresh and tasty, and evokes Italian music in my mind.
I was confused between ice-cream vs. gelato vs. sorbet. But gelato is not overdone like ice-cream and not overly sweet like sorbet, and simpler than fro-yo (which was a close contender) or frozen custard. And that’s what I want to have today!!! Let’s go! 😀
