If you ask what I like best out of rafting, kayaking and sailing, I’d certainly pick kayaking. And I’ll tell you why.

You see, rafting is more for rough waters and is a group activity, so sometimes it gets extreme and sometimes you’re left not even paddling at all. Plus it often gets splashy and stuff. Sometimes enough to not be able to enjoy the scenery or see where one is going! Sailing is a lot of fun in the wind and all. It can also get too calm at times and may need quick action and maneuvering at other times, leaving you tense. 😛

Kayaking can be either on still or rough waters, but I love it best on still waters, like calm rivers, lakes or seas. That lets you go at your own pace, not at the pace of the water or wind – leaving you with all the time and energy to relax and take in your surrounding landscapes (or cityscapes), while giving you a good arm workout at the same time. It’s is the perfect outdoor activity for summer relaxation.

The Experience

The first few hundred meters can be daunting when you don’t know how to maneuver it. But once you get the hang of paddling the right way, you begin to enjoy the calmness and tranquillity as your kayak glides on the breezy waters. You begin to enjoy its slow floaty movements. Time quickly flies when you reach the point that you start paddling subconsciously, just gazing at the waves and the landscape, absorbing the fact that you’re sitting on top of water so close you can actually feel the ripples and touch it.

Kayaking is like sipping a glass of wine – you could take as long as you want to finish the glass, seeing the way the color changes when you tilt it, swirling it to take in the aroma, tasting all its fine flavors and detecting its texture, and then noting its aftertaste.
